In the beginning—2009–Todd Bol of Hudson, Wisconsin, built a model of a one room schoolhouse as a tribute to his mother, a former school teacher who loved reading. He filled it with books and put it on a post in his front yard. His neighbors and friends loved it. He built several more and gave them away. Each one had a sign that said FREE BOOKS. Rick Brooks, of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, saw Bol’s do-it-yourself project while they were discussing potential social enterprises. Together, the two saw opportunities to achieve a wide variety of goals for the common good. Each brought different skills to the effort, Bol as a creative craftsman experienced with innovative enterprise models and Brooks as a youth and community development educator with a background in social marketing. The power of humanity is we strive to continuously improve. We eventually fix the problems we create. Every 100 years it’s all new people, that way we don’t get stuck in the belief that now is the best it can be.

Fun visit to HF today...the design students I met with couldn't quite fathom that I graduated in 1978, I told them I parked my horse in the same parking lot their cars were in!
It was fun seeing all of the amazing upgrades and changes to the school! They asked what the High School looked like 45 years ago, and what we had for school lunches.
Mostly they asked about being a Real Estate Agent and owning businesses...their generation wants to be "entrepreneurs" so they don't have to work so hard!! I told them owning your business means there is no start or stop time, or day off.
To further burst their bubbles, I shared that the Real Estate "Reality" Shows they liked, were pretty much all staged, scripted and fake.
One last thing to share...I think I got there 30 minutes early because I didn't want to be late to my 6th period class!
GO HF!!
