⭐️U16 Girls Football ⭐️ Our u16 girls footballers had their first group game which was an away game, against neighbours Ardscoil Phadraig played at St Mary’s Granard. It was always going to be an interesting afternoon, when two schools from the same town meet on the pitch. With plenty of the players being clubmates and close friends outside school, there was a great spirit to the occasion. Once the whistle went, there was no shortage of competitiveness.
Ardscoil played with the strong wind advantage in the first half, which proved to be a tight and evenly contested affair. Ardscoil got off to the better start but slowly the Cnoc Mhuire girls settled and led by a point as it approached halftime. However, two goals allowed Ardscoil to take control of the scoreboard and go into the break five points ahead.
The response of the Cnoc Mhuire girls after halftime was outstanding and said everything about the character of this group. Despite the dreadful weather conditions, the intensity of the Cnoc Mhuire girls went through the roof. The pressure on the opposition kickouts was relentless. Every player chased, tackled, covered and fought for the team, making it very difficult for Ardscoil to work the ball up the field. A special mention must go to Hannah Reilly, who was outstanding when introduced. Having only recently joining Cnoc Mhuire, she handled what could easily have been an emotional occasion with tremendous composure and produced an excellent performance for CMG. Cnoc Mhuire dominated the second half and the result was ultimately a comfortable win. An excellent team performance for Cnoc Mhuire but a special mention must also go to Orna Higgin’s who was exceptional in defence. Thanks also to Mr Birmingham, Ms Deneher and Ms Moloney for supporting the girls today.
Many of the girls, on both teams, will line out together again at club level next week, where they are involved in finals. We are sure the same competitive spirit will be seen again!
Next up is a home game against Oldcastle on Tuesday the 29th of September.
