Holly Cullen, TY won a gold medal in the 100m backcrawl and a bronze medal in the 100m freestyle at the recent Connacht Senior Schools Swimming Gala. Holly achieved a personal best in each event and will now go represent Connacht in the Interpros in March for the 100m backcrawl.

🌟 PAST PUPIL SPOTLIGHT 🌟We caught up with Liam Farrell: Class of 2026 to find out how he’s getting on since leaving Cnoc Mhuire and to hear some of his favourite memories from his time with us.

How are you getting on since leaving Cnoc Mhuire? What are you doing now? I’m certainly taking things handy since my time at Cnoc Mhuire. After getting my first choice in Galway, I decided to defer in order to work and do Law for a year in Cavan Institute.

What do you miss most about Cnoc Mhuire? I really enjoyed the craic in TY and 5th Year. Along with this, there are people, both students and teachers, that I miss. Sometimes I have to remind myself that getting separated from friends is a natural part of life.

What was your favourite memory from your time in the school? History and English with Mr Coyle, for better or worse, had a strong impact on shaping my future aspirations. Being taught by him from 1st to 6th Year definitely inspired a deep interest in literature for me. It was through his recommendation that I won an award with the Granard Writers Group. I’ll certainly remember my tendency to debate with him, especially when I undertake a degree in History and Politics.

What advice would you give to the current Leaving Certificate students? Work hard, but enjoy yourself all the same. Some of the best nights out you’ll ever go on could potentially be during your 6th Year. Knowing your peers since day one of the six years of school will be something hard to come by in future endeavours. Try and appreciate the bond you’ve formed with classmates, with the short time you have left with them. However easy or difficult that may be!

🌟 PAST PUPIL SPOTLIGHT 🌟We caught up with Roisin Grant: Class of 2026 to find out how she’s getting on since leaving Cnoc Mhuire and to hear some of her favourite memories from her time with us. 💙

How are you getting on since leaving Cnoc Mhuire?
I’m currently studying Arts at the University of Galway, where I’m studying Psychology, Spanish and Economics, and I’m absolutely loving it! Arts wasn’t my first choice on my CAO, but I’m delighted with it now as it gives me so many options in the future. I think I’ll do my PME to become a Spanish teacher after college. Galway itself is amazing and so full of life, and I’m really enjoying college life.

What do you miss most about Cnoc Mhuire?
I love college, but I miss home of course, and I definitely miss CMG. I suppose it was such a safety net for me as I loved school, had a great group of friends and got along with my teachers. I’d say I miss the sense of community the most, as well as seeing my friends and teachers every day.

What was your favourite memory from your time in the school?
I loved school and enjoyed every part of it, but the standout moment for me was, of course, the boys winning the All-Ireland Final. It was amazing seeing all of my friends be on such a high after every game leading up to it, and every match really showcased the sense of community that CMG has. Especially at the All-Ireland, the stand was filled with family, friends, staff and past pupils, and it was just amazing. 💙🏆

What advice would you give to the current Leaving Certificate students?
Firstly, don’t stress yourself out if you feel like you’re behind at any point! You have so much time. Try to stay on top of everything and there will be no last-minute panic to study. If you’re unsure of what you want to do after school, don’t let that worry you, you have so much time to figure that out. And of course, ENJOY! 6th Year is daunting, but it was an amazing year for us and I hope it’s as fun for you. There are so many fun parts to 6th Year, so make the most of them and your time there because it will fly! And best of luck, you’ll all do amazing. If you put in the work, it will pay off! 💙

The Senior footballers of Cnoc Mhuire got their season off to a winning start with a well-earned home win against a strong Moyne side last week.
Moyne had won the corresponding U16 fixture two years earlier, while last year Moyne’s U16 side reached the Leinster final, losing narrowly to Edenderry. The girls knew they faced a tough challenge, and their preparations over the past couple of months had been driven by one clear goal: to beat Moyne.

This was a victory built on a wholehearted team effort, with every player—from Ayeisha in goals to those coming off the bench—playing her part.

The foundations for victory were laid by a defence that remained disciplined and tenacious throughout the full hour. Bronagh Reilly and Sarah Murphy led the way, both showing tremendous determination and ferocity in the tackle, diving blocks the norm rather than the exception. In midfield Jessica Shiels and Serafima Monaghan complemented each other perfectly, the former setting up attack after attack with quick early ball and the latter covering almost every blade of grass on James Mc’s finely prepared pitch!

Fainche Higgins had a superb game at centre forward firing over points from every angle and scoring a thunderous goal that nearly took the net—and the posts—with it. 3 more goals came from the full forward line. Etain Higgins, with a beautifully taken three pointer, to go alongside some wonderfully taken points. It’s great to see Etain back playing so well after a year hampered by injury. Alongside her, Izzy Masterson was immense, scoring two superb goals and terrorising a very good Moyne defence throughout.

Many of those good scores were set up by Longford Minor Ladies captain Zara Drake (joint captain on the day with Fainche), a joy to watch in full flight!

Having received a bye in the opening round, the girls’ hopes of progressing now rest on the rescheduled fixture against Meán Scoil Longford. Victory would secure a place in the Leinster quarter-final, but the girls are well aware of Meán Scoil’s quality and know they will need to be at their best to get over the line.

The girls celebrated the win with some birthday cake for Ms. Dawson, a huge addition to the team…and to the school.

🏀The U16 and U19 girls basketball teams had a busy few days out, at home against Killina, and away against St Joseph’s Rochfortbridge. The U16s were very successful winning the two games with great teamwork and dedication from start to finish. Our U19 didn’t have so much luck but played brilliantly showing resilience and never gave up. A solid effort from both teams who have been training hard during the season ! Well done girls !🏀
