There have been many defining moments from throughout the History of our nation - in today's post, we'll be taking a look at some of the most important and impactful events from Ireland's past.

1. The Anglo-Norman Invasion of Ireland (1169-1171) was a watershed moment in Irish History. Dermot MacMurrough allied with Richard de Clare - also known as "Strongbow" - to launch an invasion of the east of Ireland. Ultimately, Strongbow's takeover of Irish territories proved to be very alarming for King Henry II, who promptly arrived with a fleet of more than 400 ships and declared himself "Lord of Ireland".

2. The Flight of the Earls (1607) is considered one of the most tragic events in Irish History, as it marked the defeat and destruction of the ancient Gaelic Order in Ireland. When Hugh O'Neill and Rory O'Donnell - the two most powerful Gaelic chieftains in Ulster - fled the province, it marked the downfall of native Irish resistance to British rule.

3. The Flight of the Wild Geese (1691) effectively stripped Ireland of its professional military class and cemented the dominance of the British Protestant ascendancy for more than two centuries to come. The 14,000 Irish soldiers who chose exile in France over declaring loyalty to the Crown left no one behind to defend against the rising British authorities.

4. The 1798 Rebellion was the first organised attempt at establishing an independent Irish Republic, separate from the British Crown. It shattered the existing political relationship between Ireland and Britain, prompting the creation of the United Kingdom.

5. The Easter Rising (1916) was perhaps the most major turning point in the Irish pursuit of independence from Britain. After the brutal ex*****on of the uprising's leaders, general public opinion started to favour the goal of establishing a fully independent Ireland. This paved the way for the Irish War of Independence, fought from 1919 to 1921.

The month of May has brought us some of the most important events in all of human History - from tragedies to triumphs, let's take a look back at the Historical happenings of this month that have reshaped civilization as we know it.

1. The Fall of Constantinople (29 May 1453) - The conquest of the Byzantine capital by the Ottomans marked a major shift in the History of Southeastern Europe. It brought a final, official end to the Historical Roman Empire - a state that had existed since roughly 27 BC and had lasted almost 1,500 years.

2. The Sinking of the Lusitania (7 May 1915) - After the Lusitania was struck by a German torpedo, 1,197 of the 1,960 people aboard died in the sinking of the ship - the vast majority of whom were merely civilians. This unprecedented act of violence against innocent people came entirely without a warning, and largely turned international public opinion against Germany during World War I.

3. World War II Ends in Europe (8 May 1945) - Germany signed their instrument of unconditional surrender to the Allied Powers on May 8th, which largely brought an end to fighting in Europe. However, the Second World War as a whole would continue to rage on in the Pacific - with fighting between the United States and Japan persisting until September 2nd, 1945.

4. Ex*****on of Most Easter Rising Leaders (3-12 May 1916) - Following the military failure of the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin, most of the prominent leaders of the insurrection were executed by British authorities throughout May of 1916. These tragic killings may have marked a military defeat, but they resulted in a massive turn of public opinion which paved the way for the later Irish War of Independence.

5. The Death of Napoleon Bonaparte (5 May 1821) - After returning from his first exile in 1815, Napoleon reclaimed his position as ruler of France for a period known as the Hundred Days. However, his loss at the Battle of Waterloo marked his final defeat in the Napoleonic Wars. Following this, he was exiled to the island of St. Helena, where he lived for 6 years before passing due to stomach cancer.
