We just had the pleasure of running a highly successful 5th Conference of the UL/UU cooperation, “Evolving Relationships – Ireland, the UK and Beyond,” held this year in collaboration with the Centre for British Studies at Humboldt‑Universität zu Berlin.
Moving beyond our usual locations of Limerick and Belfast, and benefiting from the splendid hospitality of the GBZ and the Irish Embassy (as well as the outstanding support of the DAAD), added a special and enriching dimension to this year’s conference.
Our sincere thanks go to all speakers for their stimulating presentations and the thoughtful, engaging discussions they inspired. Your contributions made the conference both intellectually vibrant and deeply rewarding. Paul Carmichael, Embassy of Ireland, Berlin – Botschaft von Irland Berlin, Centre for British Studies - HU Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Julia von Blumenthal, DAAD German Academic Exchange Service, University of Limerick, Ulster University, Paolo Chiocchetti, Maeve Collins, Natalie Toms, Elke Hanusch, Eamon Gilmore, Sigrid Rieuwerts, Geraldine Clarke, Rainer Emig, david donoghue, John J Gormley, Susan McKay, Brigid Laffan, Paul Gillespie, Daniel Mulhall, Ralf Sotscheck, Hilary Reilly, Ailsa Kienberger, Gesa Stedman, Eda Sagarra, Jan Carson, Deirdre Heenan, Sam McBride, Katharina Rennhak, Klaus Stolz, Jan Carson, Hugo Hamilton, Oran Doyle, Richard Hill

Last Tuesday, the Centre for Irish-German Studies hosted their research day in The Globe at UL. We had a range of interesting research projects, from Irish classical music to traditional Irish music in Germany, Sean O’Casey and his time in East Berlin, the artist Imogen Stuart and Irish author Elizabeth Shaw who wrote children’s books in the GDR, early women professors in German, primary school material to teach German and newly discovered photographs of the Irish aid after WWII. Further discussions involved the Irish Council Presidency and showcased a lovely programme Gisela Holfter, director of CIGS, created in collaboration with many stakeholders in the city to celebrate the Limerick-Germany pairing. The day finished with a brainstorming session on the upcoming 30-year anniversary of the Centre and was filled with conversations and networking amongst our members.
A huge thank you to Sabine Egger, Felix Morgenstern, PhD Claire O’Reilly, PhD Christiane Schönfeld, MRIA Jerome Aan de Wiel, Axel Klein and Deirdre Byrnes.
