Jerusalem Archaeological Studies Unit Institute of Archaeology - Al-Quds University

The Institute of Archaeology, established by Al-Quds University in 1992, was the first academic archaeological institute to be established locally. It was housed in the Old City and in Sheikh Jarrah until it was forced, due to the separation of East Jerusalem from the rest of the West Bank, to relocate to the University’s Abu Dis campus so that classes could continue. In 2011, the Institute of Arc

haeology established the Jerusalem Archaeological Studies Unit in Al-Quds University’s Jerusalem City campus to continue to play an academic role in the study of the archaeology of Jerusalem; to provide a base from which to research and analyse excavations carried out in the city; and to be an academic reference for research on Jerusalem. The Jerusalem Archaeological Studies Unit will carry out and promote research and studies on the archaeology of Jerusalem, and is working on a series of publications focusing on major archaeological sites discovered by pioneers in the field of archaeology in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Unit has a planned series of seminars and workshops on the archaeology of Jerusalem taking place through 2011-2012. It will also offer courses at a BA and graduate level, and is in the process of creating a library specialized in Jerusalem. Through these initiatives, it hopes to raise awareness about the archaeology and history of Jerusalem among Jerusalemites and society in general.
