New MBBS, BDS Students Don White Coats

Aligarh, December 20: White coats were placed on the shoulders of 150 newly admitted Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and 40 Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) students marking their passage into the medical and dental education in a special ceremony held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) auditorium of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

These students later read the Hippocratic Oath signifying their transition from the study of preclinical to clinical health sciences to study at the AMU’s Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) and Dr Ziauddin Ahmed Dental College (ZADC).

Addressing the new students, AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof Tariq Mansoor said, “As you all embark on this new journey; it is expected that you will find ways to embrace learning and anchor yourself in the importance and meaning of relationships. The new students should keep in mind that they have contributions to make in the honored medical and dental science professions which involve a large component of service and personal sacrifice”.
He added: “JNMC and ZADC are among the best in India and there is a unique environment in these colleges to help prepare students in thrilling and unexpected ways for the many advances and scholarships coming in medical and dental fields. These colleges are a special part of AMU, a culture rich higher seat of learning which imparts training to shape its students for the rest of their lives”.

“As students don the white coats and swear to uphold specific ethical standards, they must not forget that it is also a great moment for their parents, who have longed to see them becoming doctors and dentists”, said Prof M U Rabbani (Dean, Faculty of Medicine).

He stressed, “Health care profession is an opportunity to save lives and doctors are required to treat the sick to the best of their ability, preserve patient privacy and to teach the secrets of medicine to the next generation”.

“Over the course of four-and-a-half years, the medical and dental students will find innovative and groundbreaking teaching, research, and healing taking place”, said Prof Rakesh Bhargava (Principal, JNMC).

He also urged the new students to cultivate qualities like humility, courage, charity, and patience in their character.
Prof Rajendra Kumar Tewari (Principal, ZADC) emphasised: “More than just a formality, the White Coat Ceremony commemorates as the beginning of a student’s forthcoming career and serves as an official and public commitment to a lifelong practice in medicine and dentistry. From now on, all the new students must keep in mind that the profession they are entering into demands giving priority to the interests of patients and setting up standards of competence and integrity”.

Prof Tamkin Khan (Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology) administered the Hippocratic Oath.

Dr Shagufta Moin (Department of Biochemistry-JNMC) extended the vote of thanks and Dr Nafis Faizi (Department of Community Medicine) conducted the programme.

JNMC doctors bring laurels

Aligarh, September 29: Dr Tabassum Nawab, Assistant Professor in the Department of Community Medicine, J N Medical College, AMU, received the Best Oral Paper presentation of the session award at the 66th Annual National Indian Public Health Association Conference (IPHACON 2022) held at Bharati Vidyapeeth (DTU) Medical College, Pune.

She presented her paper titled “Knowledge, Attitude and Perceived Barriers to Physical Activity and their Association with Physical Inactivity among Adults.

Dr Asra Saquib, Junior Resident, Department of Community Medicine bagged the Best Poster Presentation of the session award on her paper titled “Multimorbidity and it’s Correlates among Middle-Aged and Older Adults in Aligarh”.

Dr Danish Kamal and Dr Jubair Shamsi, Junior Residents, Department of Community Medicine qualified for the final round of the Dr Deoki Nandan Memorial Public Health Quiz "QUEST 2022".

National Pharmacovigilance Week celebrated

The ADR Monitoring Centre, JNMCH, AMU, celebrated the second “National Pharmacovigilance Week” by organising a series of events including a sensitization programme for patients in JNMCH and ZADC. CME Programme for faculty members and resident doctors was also organised, where experts delivered talks on various aspects of pharmacovigilance.

The Chief Guest, Dr Neeraj Tyagi (CMO, Aligarh) remarked: “The healthcare providers must be encouraged to report ADRs for better understanding of the risk associated with the use of medicines and to safeguard the health of the population.

Prof Rakesh Bhargava, Dean F/O Medicine, Principal and CMS, JNMCH said the continuous progress in medical and pharmaceutical sciences has made the availability of newer pharmaceutical products. Later he presented appreciation certificates to the senior and junior residents of the Department of Pharmacology.

Prof Haris M Khan, Medical Superintendent, JNMCH, added that the rapid detection and recording of adverse drug reactions is vital so that the hazards are identified promptly and appropriate regulatory action is taken.

Prof Waseem Rizvi, Chairman, Department of Pharmacology, JNMC, appreciated the event.

Prof Farida Ahmad (Coordinator, AMC) said such sensitization programmes should be encouraged.

Dr Irfan Ahmad Khan (Deputy Coordinator), in his welcome address emphasised that ADR Monitoring Centre is a key pillar in effective monitoring of the safety related to drugs

Prof Shahzad F Haque (Department of Medicine), Prof Kamran Afzal (Department of Paediatrics, JNMCH) and Prof Mohammad Shameem (Department of TBRD) were felicitated for their continuous support towards AMC on the occasion. Dr Umair Shamshul Hoda (Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology), Dr Pratyakcha Rai (Department of TBRD) and Dr Shruti Bansal (Department of Radiotherapy) were also awarded for reporting maximum ADRs to the centre.

Pharmacovigilance quiz for MBBS and BDS students and E-Poster competition was also held. In the quiz competition, Prashant Kumar Lodhi was declared winner while Faraz Hasan and Nosheen Neyazi were first and second runner-up respectively.

In the E-poster competition, Dr Vibhu Pandey was declared winner while Dr Hiramani Rabha and Dr Dheeraj PS were the first and second runner-up respectively.

Dr Aditya Vikram Singh conducted the proceedings and Dr Bushra Hasan Khan extended the vote of thanks.

Junior resident doctors win big at PED-OBGY -Fusion 2022

Aligarh, September 21: Dr Syeda Iqra Usman, a junior resident doctor of the Department of Pathology, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) won the poster competition of PED-OBGY-Fusion 2022 of the Shri Ram Murti Smarak Institute of Medical Sciences, Bareilly held from September 9 to 11.

She presented a scientific e-poster on ‘Synchronous Presentation of Benign Brenner Tumor with Mature Cystic Teratoma in Contralateral Ovary’ which was prepared under the supervision of Prof Kafil Akhtar.

Dr Neda Ahsan, who is also a junior resident doctor at the Department of Pathology received the consolation prize in the oral paper presentation contest at PED-OBGY -Fusion 2022. She prepared the research work under the guidance of Dr Suhailur Rehman.

Felicitating the winners with certificates and mementoes, Prof Rakesh Bharagava (Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Principal, JNMC) said: “Both Dr Syeda Iqra and Dr Neda did excellent jobs of explaining difficult concepts clearly and accurately in their works. We all appreciate the thoroughness of their research”.

“The interesting insights Dr Syeda Iqra and Dr Neda in their poster and oral presentations respectively are very informative, deserving due recognition”, said Prof S H Arif (Chairman, Department of Pathology).

Prof Arif guided all the resident doctors who had participated in the conference.

Meanwhile, Prof Seema Hakim (Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology) also delivered a lecture on ‘Massive Obstetrics Haemorrhage: Care Bundle’ at the conference.

AMU Cardiologist presents analysis of coronary angioplasty and pacemaker data of JNMC
Aligarh, September 22: Prof M U Rabbani, Chairman, Department of Cardiology, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and President, UP Chapter of Cardiology Society of India lucidly explained the success of complex cardiology procedures at JNMC.

He was presenting a detailed analysis of coronary angioplasty and pacemaker data of JNMC to delegates in the ‘Coronary and Structural Intervention Council Meet of the UP Chapter of Cardiology Society held at Lucknow recently.

Prof M U Rabbani gave details of procedures at JNMC ranging from placing catheters to releasing narrowed arteries to medications and lifestyle changes advised by doctors that are immensely helping people with heart conditions.

After inaugurating the conference with senior cardiologists from Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) and King George's Medical University (KGMU), he also discussed structural interventions like Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) involving inserting catheter into blood vessels to fix replacement valves.
TAVI is an emerging technique where aortic valve can be replaced without open heart surgery in a select group of patients, he emphasised.

Prof Rabbani encouraged young cardiologists to present cases of coronary and other cardiovascular interventions.

World Alzheimer’s Day observed

ALIGARH September 21: The Department of Psychiatry, J N Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University organized an awareness programme on “World Alzheimer’s Day” in its OPD no. 8.
Addressing on the occasion, Professor S.A. Azmi (Chairperson) said Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease that impairs memory and other mental functions, however, some medications are available that can help slow the process of memory impairment.

He said Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia characterized by memory loss and loss of other essential cognitive abilities that are serious enough to interfere with an individual’s daily life.

“As per Alzheimer’s disease International, there were over 55 million people suffering from the disorder worldwide in 2020. This number may double every 20 years with a total of 78 million cases of dementia in 2030 and 139 million cases in 2050”, he added.

Dr. Mohammed Reyazuddin and Dr. Jitendra Kumar also spoke on various aspects of Alzheimer’s disease.

CME on Pharmacovigilance

Aligarh, September 20: Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) Monitoring Centre, JNMCH, AMU, has been celebrating “National Pharmacovigilance Week” and as a part of it a CME on Pharmacovigilance was organized under PvPI, IPC, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India today.
Chief Guest Prof Rakesh Bhargava Dean faculty of Medicine, Principal & CMS, JNMC, AMU stressed the need of the Nationwide Pharmacovigilance Programme and role of clinician in ADR monitoring. He also encouraged clinician to report of all types of suspected adverse reactions with all pharmaceutical products irrespective of whether they are known or unknown, serious or non-serious and frequent or rare

Programme Coordinator Prof. Farida Ahmad emphasized the importance of ADR Monitoring and reporting. In her remark she said that all healthcare professionals including clinicians, dentists, pharmacists, nurses, and non-healthcare professionals (patients/consumers) can report ADRs. It is a moral responsibility of all to report adverse reactions associated with pharmaceutical products to safeguard public health and help in improving patient safety.

Monkey Pox management awareness programme at JNMC

Faculty members, resident doctors and nursing-in-charges were provided with the understanding of Monkey Pox malady management in an awareness programme of the Department of Microbiology and Hospital Infection Control Committee (HICC), Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

Prof Rakesh Bhargava (Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Principal, JNMC) said there was no cause for concern presently and just like the spread of Covid was checked, Monkeypox too can be contained.

“JNMC doctors have been on an alert since the first case of Monkeypox in Kerala. All arrangements are in place and there is need to be vigilant, but no need to panic’, said Prof Shahid Ali Siddiqui (Chairman, HICC).

He also spoke about the combined efforts of JNMC health workers during the Covid pandemic waves.

Prof Haris M Khan (Chairman, Department of Microbiology and Medical Superintendent) apprised the doctors about the practical difficulties which they may come across in attending Monkeypox cases.

Prof Kamran Afzal (Chairman, Department of Paediatrics) presented a session on ‘Monkey Pox Vaccination’, Dr Fatima Khan (Department of Microbiology) talked about the infection control practices to be followed in case of Monkeypox outbreak’, Dr Ruhi Khan (Department of Medicine) delineated ‘Clinical Features and Management of Monkeypox Disease’ and Dr Parvez A Khan (Department of Microbiology) discussed ‘Virology and Diagnostics of Monkey Pox’.

Meanwhile, Dr Zeeshan was declared the winner of the ‘brain-storming’ activity for Monkeypox awareness.
Dr Shariq Ahmed and Dr Mobasshir Hassan conducted the programme.

Meanwhile, nursing students also participated in a HICC workshop on ‘Monkey Pox’ management and in a quiz contest on malady awareness.

Nursing students, Firoz, Anam and Hiba won the first, second and third prizes respectively in the quiz.

After the welcome address by Prof Haris M Khan (Chairman, Department of Microbiology, Medical Superintendent) and Dr Farha Azmi (Principal, Nursing College); Dr Safiya Feroze explained the ‘Epidemiology of Monkeypox Disease’, Dr Fatima Khan demonstrated the ‘Infection Control Practices’ to be performed during Monkeypox outbreak, Dr Uzma Tayyaba discussed the ‘Virology of Monkeypox virus’, Dr Hiba Sami held a session on ‘Diagnosis of Monkey Pox’ and Dr Shariq Ahmed delineated ‘Clinical Features and Case Management of Monkeypox affected individuals’.

Training program on Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare

The Department of Microbiology, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University in association with Makeintern and E-Cell IIT Kharagpur, organized a training program on the topic “Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare”.

Addressing the program, Dean, Faculty of Medicine & Principal, JNMC, Prof Rakesh Bhargava stated that Artificial Intelligence refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are programmed to think like humans and mimic their actions. “The term may also be applied to any machine that exhibits traits associated with a human mind such as learning and problem-solving. AI has proven to be very fruitful in analysing X-rays, especially during COVID-19 times,” he said.

Orgainsing Chairman & Medical Superintendent, JNMCH, Prof Haris M Khan in his welcome address emphasized that Artificial Intelligence can play a crucial role in global public health as a tool for combating epidemics and pandemics as well as in routine health care. “AI is bringing a paradigm shift, powered by increasing availability of healthcare data and rapid progress of analytics techniques' ' he added.

Dr. Puneet Kacker, Functional and Industry Analytics Manager, Applied Intelligence, Strategy and Consulting, Accenture (IIT Kharagpur); sensitized the participants regarding AI followed by a hands-on brainstorming workshop.

Students pursuing MBBS, MD, and students from Interdisciplinary Biotechnology Unit attended the program while Dr. Fatima Khan, Faculty Coordinator, presented the vote of thanks.

Vice Chancellor release books

Aligarh, August 26: ‘Anaesthesia Consolidated Notes of Operation Theatre Technology’ a book authored by Prof Shahla Haleem (Department of Anaesthesiology) and co-authored by Dr Nida Nawaz (Paramedical College) recently released by Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Vice Chancellor, Prof Tariq Mansoor, promises to change the approach in Anaesthesia with incredible freshness.
“I hope this hope will hold the hands of young doctors to let them explore the Anaesthesia field at a blistering pace. It will be a useful reference book in operation theaters allowing readers to gain knowledge that would broaden their perspective about the subject matter”, said Vice Chancellor, Prof Mansoor at the book release ceremony.

Prof Rakesh Bhargava (Dean, Faculty of Medicine and Principal, JNMC) emphasised: “This book presents the complex subject of anesthesiology in the most comprehensible and easy to understand language”.

“Prof Shahla Haleem and Dr Nida Nawaz’s book strives to provide a fair idea about Anaesthesia in operation theatres and will help in developing a better understanding of the latest advances within this field”, pointed out Prof Ibne Ahmad (Principal, Paramedical College).

Prof Qazi Ehsan Ali (Chairman, Department of Anaesthesiology) and Dr Abu Nadeem said, “Anaesthesia Consolidated Notes of Operation Theatre Technology features crisp, readable prose that focuses on the most relevant topics in anesthesiology in operation theatres”.
