A research study by Prof. Rakesh Arrawatia, Professor, IRMA and “Tribhuvan” Sahkari University (TSU) and Dean, School of Cooperative Banking and Finance, TSU, and Prof. Lakshmi Padmakumari, Assistant Professor, IRMA and TSU, along with Sumit Sharma, Research Fellow, IRMA, has been published in the Journal of Agribusiness in Developing and Emerging Economies.

The study titled, “Balancing Act: The Economic Toll of India’s 2021 Suspension of Agricultural Futures Trading”, investigates the unintended consequences of India’s regulatory decision to suspend agricultural commodity derivatives, namely the futures contracts, in an effort to curb food inflation. It explores the impact of the intervention on smallholder farmers, value chain participants (VCPs) and traders, focusing on market access, risk management and financial stability in key oilseed-producing states.

The study, conducted across Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, demonstrates that the suspension of the agricultural commodity derivatives although implemented to manage inflation, had several unintended consequences, including disruption of market coordination, a reduction in farmers’ bargaining power and heightening uncertainty, all of which ultimately impacted incomes. Additionally, the absence of formal hedging options increased the vulnerabilities faced by small traders and farmers.

We are pleased to announce that the third web-based course by “Tribhuvan” Sahkari University has been unveiled on the iGOT Karmayogi Bharat platform. The course has been conceptualised, designed, and delivered by Prof. Indranil De, Professor at IRMA and Chair (Research, Consulting and Training) at “Tribhuvan” Sahkari University.

The course titled, “Principles and Governance of Cooperative Institutions”, introduces the foundational principles that guide the governance, management, and sustainability of cooperative organizations. It brings together two important frameworks:

1. The design principles for governing commons developed by Elinor Ostrom; and

2. The cooperative principles articulated by the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA).

While Ostrom’s principles explain how collective institutions can successfully manage shared resources through effective rules, monitoring, and conflict resolution, the ICA principles emphasize the values and identity of cooperatives as democratic, member-driven enterprises.

The course examines how these two frameworks complement each other in practice.

Karmayogi Bharat is a national digital learning platform under Mission Karmayogi, the National Programme for Civil Services Capacity Building, created to empower government officials with world-class learning and skill development opportunities. The launch of this course marks a significant milestone in the University’s engagement with national capacity-building initiatives.
