The NLSIU Student Bar Debate

The NLSIU Student Bar Debate 80 Minutes, 8 Speeches, 2 Sides. You decide. Prominent participants of the NLS Union Debates include Justice (Retd.) Gen.

Modelled on the Oxford Union Debates, the NLS Student Bar Debate (known for 7 editions as the NLS Union Debates), involve hosting lectures followed by topical debates at least twice a year on contemporary issues affecting our lives. So far, we have successfully hosted seven editions of the Debate, which have focused on a wide array of interesting areas such as hunger strikes, legislative oversight

over intelligence agencies, politicization of academic syllabuses, intellectual property rights in the context of the DU copyrights case, ethics in the armed forces, the role of the media and judicial appointments in India. Santosh Hegde, the former Lokayukta of Karnataka; Dr. Chandan Mitra, Member of Parliament and the chief editor of the Pioneer; Lt. Satish Nambiar PVSM AVSM VRC (Retd.); Member, Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses, former Force Commander and Head of Mission of the United Nations Protection Force in Yugoslavia; Mr. Jacob Applebaum, who is a core member of the ‘Tor’ project and had collaborated with Wikileaks and Mr. Julian Assange on a number of occasions; Mr. Veera Raghav, Senior Editor, CNN IBN; Professor G. Hargopal, an academic, renowned human rights activists and former Political Science Professor at the Central University of Hyderabad; Mr. Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, a journalist who has been employed with various media organizations including companies bringing out publications such as Business India, Business World, The Telegraph, India Today and The Pioneer; Mr. Ram Jethmalani, who is a Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) and Senior Advocate in Supreme Court of India; Mr. Raju Ramachandran, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India; Professor VS Mallar, Professor of Constitutional Law, NLSIU and Professor Sudhir Krishnaswamy, an alumnus of NLSIU and Professor of Law at Azim Premji University, Bangalore.

Speaker #2 (Opposition): Mr. Nitin Ramesh
Mr. Nitin Ramesh is the current Additional Advocate General for Bangalore Bench of the Karnataka High Court. Nitin Ramesh graduated with BA LLB (Hons.) from the National Law School, Bangalore. He has a masters’ degree in law from the University of London, SOAS and a research degree at the University of Cambridge. He was a clerk to the then Chief Justice of India, K.G. Balakrishnan. He went on to be legal advisor to the Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj and started his practice in the Supreme Court. Thereafter he shifted base to Bangalore and has been practicing law at the trial and appellate levels in both civil and criminal jurisdictions in the entire State of Karnataka.

Mr. Shivam Singh is a sports law and dispute resolution counsel working in the Supreme and High Courts in India. He has worked a counsel at the office of the Advocate General, Government of Bihar at the Patna High Court for 2 years. He has been practicing in Delhi since 2014 and also served as a defense counsel in one of India’s most complex criminal trials (Coal Scam Trial).
He has completed his education at Harvard Law School, Columbia Law School and National Law School and serves as visiting Faculty at Columbia Law School.

Dr. Sudhir Krishnaswamy
Dr. Sudhir Kirshnaswamy is a co-founder of CLPR, and a partner at Ashira Law. He is currently a faculty member at the Azim Premji University. He was also the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Visiting Professor of Indian Constitutional Law at Columbia Law School.
He graduated from the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore (B.A. LL.B). He read the BCL and obtained a D.Phil. from Oxford University. He has been a Teaching Fellow in Law at the Pembroke College at Oxford University, an Assistant Professor at NLSIU and a Professor at the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata.
In the past, Sudhir has also worked in the Prime Minister’s Committee on Infrastructure and the Kasturirangan Committee on Governance of Bangalore. He has authored a book titled ‘Democracy and Constitutionalism in India’ which was published by the Oxford University Press in 2009.
His main areas of interest are constitutional law, legal education, legal theory, intellectual property law and administrative law.

Ms. Malavika Prasad
Malavika Prasad is an advocate and doctoral fellow at the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research. She completed her BA LLB from Nalsar University of Law and LLM focused on constitutional law from University of Michigan Law School. She teaches democracy and the Indian Constitution through experiential learning. She has conducted the Comparative Constitutional Law GIAN Course on the Indian and Irish Inter-connections in Constitutional Law at NALSAR University of Law. She is currently researching alternate pedagogies to teach democracy, cooperation and living under the Indian Constitution to children and young adults, with a focus on the challenges of the Anthropocene. She also regularly writes for sites like Scroll, The Caravan, and the Wire.

36% in favour of Proposition and 64% in favour of Opposition before the Debate.

Alok Prasanna Kumar is a Senior Resident Fellow and heads the Bengaluru office of the Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy. He obtained his BA LL.B (Hons) degree from the NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad and then obtained his BCL from the University of Oxford. He practiced as an advocate in Delhi under the former Solicitor General of India in areas of taxation law, constitutional and administrative law. He is a columnist for the Economic and political weekly and writes regularly on constitutional law and theory.

Speaker #2 (Side Proposition) : Mr.Siddharth Acharya

A lawyer and a filmmaker, Siddharth passed from the Government Law College Mumbai. He has always been passionate about human rights issues and has used several of his short films to convey his ideas and generate awareness. His film ’the Abandoned Cranes’ garnered a great deal of attention and was subsequently screened at the House of Commons in London and the European Union headquarters. He has addressed the he British Parliament and French Parliament on the socio-economic concerns that hound the Kashmiri Pundits.
