The journey of almost every JEE aspirant starts with the aim of bagging a Computer Science seat in one of the top 5 IITs, which accounts for about only 3% of the total seats provided by the IITs. Apart from this, a great share of the seats goes to the Electrical and Mechanical departments. These are the departments that are most sought after and prospective freshmen do have some idea about the same.
However, there are other departments like Aerospace, Biotechnology, Chemical, Civil, Metallurgical & Materials Engineering, and so on, and these seats get filled too irrespective of whether the students know what the branch is like or not - it is only through the internet and contacts that students gain some knowledge about the branch they opt for. It is also possible that people outright ignore a few branches because of some preconceived notions.
Therefore, in an attempt to curb a fraction of these doubts, a couple of freshmen and sophomores from the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (MME), IIT Madras have shared their experiences in the department so far, to provide prospective freshmen a genuine and transparent view of what it is like to be a B.Tech student in MME.
