Seven years after completing his tenure as the 11th President of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam—fondly known as the "Missile Man of India"—continued to inspire the nation. He led an active life, delivering lectures and passionately advocating for education. Even after leaving Rashtrapati Bhavan, his popularity remained undiminished. Dr. Kalam was truly a people's President, and his humility set him apart.
In 2014, Dr. Kalam was invited to a function in Erode, Tamil Nadu, organized by Sowbaghya Enterprises, a well-known manufacturer of wet grinders. For those unfamiliar, wet grinders hold a special place in South Indian households, used to prepare delicious dishes like dosas and idlis. During the event, the company presented Dr. Kalam with a wet grinder as a token of appreciation. Despite needing one at home, Dr. Kalam politely refused the gift. Instead, he insisted on paying for it and issued a cheque for Rs. 4,850.
Out of respect for the former President, the company hesitated to cash the cheque. But after a month, Dr. Kalam’s office followed up, asking why the cheque hadn't been encashed. Dr. Kalam made it clear that if they didn’t deposit it, he would return the grinder.
This simple story reflects the greatness of Dr. Kalam. Even in the smallest of actions, he upheld integrity and humility. He lived a life of purpose, giving away everything he had and leaving this world with empty hands. A man without a TV for years, yet filled with vision, generosity, and unwavering dedication to the nation. His legacy continues to inspire generations to lead by example, reminding us that greatness isn't defined by material possessions but by the footprints we leave in the hearts of others.
