Who we are.

In the coming weeks, we introduce the faculty who joined us over the past year at the Indira Mahindra School of Education.

Each of us bring a distinct set of questions, commitments, and intellectual trajectories that shape how we think about education as a field of inquiry and a site of practice.

Through this series, we invite you to engage with their work, interests, and the conversations they are building within and beyond the classroom.

The series opens with Dr Chandra Lekha singh.

On March 11, 2026, IMSE had the pleasure of engaging with Dr. Shailaja Menon, Language and literacy expert, Tata Trusts.

Her presentation was titled “Re-imagining Literacy, The Role of Children’s Literature”. She co-constructively referred to both empirics and reflections from her post-graduate students in discussing the thinking-feeling aspects of engaging with literature. Literature is concerned with the abilities of making meanings, exchanging them with people (participating in societies) and feeling beauty and rhythm in them.

She unpacked the common justifications for using literature with young children, to argue for an engagement of the whole person, for creating potential for empathy etc. Her keen engagement with empathy for students translated into her practice as well: the inclusion of structured time for breathing and processing in her presentation was warm and welcomed.

Hello from IMSE!

In university we study. We learn. We have conversations and dialogues.

Chai remains the string that brings us together.

Or, perhaps, chai is the shared solitude that we all desire!

To chai!

Share with us your Chai stories as part of your academic life!

The next talk of our Seminar Series will be delivered by Dr Shailaja Menon.

Re-imagining Literacy: The Role of Children's Literature

Date: March 11, 2026
Day: Wednesday
Time: 3 p.m.
Meeting link: https://msteams.link/FXS4

About the talk:
The National Education Policy 2020 identifies foundational literacy as critical to children’s later educational success. Unfortunately, “foundational literacy” itself is currently imagined and transacted in limited and narrow ways that is unlikely to meaningfully support the larger aims of education. In this presentation she makes the argument that early literacy needs to be urgently reimagined in broader ways; and that children’s literature is not supplemental to this effort, but central to it. When literature is discussed in relation to the teaching of young children, it is typically invoked as a means for creating enjoyment, engagement, curiosity and imagination; and for building the reading habit. Rarely is it theorized rigorously as a means to support the underlying objectives of language and literacy education.

Dr. Shailaja will begin the talk by briefly establishing a rationale for re-imagining literature. Drawing upon varied theoretical lenses and classroom examples, she aims to unpack multiple ways in which engagement with literature foundationally supports young children’s learning in early language classrooms, with the aim of expanding the audience’s imagination of “early literacy” itself. She intends to end by providing a few ideas for engaging young children meaningfully with literature.

About the speaker:
Dr. Shailaja Menon is a language educator who currently leads early learning and literacy initiatives at Tata Trusts, and is facilitating the founding of the Early Learning Network of India (ELNI). Prior to this, Shailaja taught language, literacy and children’s literature courses at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and at Azim Premji University, Bangalore. She has spent more than a quarter of a century researching, teaching and writing in the areas of early language, literacy and children's literature. She is co-editor of the volumes: Children’s Books: An Indian Story (Eklavya, 2024); the Early Literacy Initiative: Resource and Practitioner Briefs series (Eklavya, 2020); and Childhoods in India: Traditions, Trends and Transformations (Routledge, 2017). She currently serves as an editor of the journal Contemporary Education Dialogue. Shailaja has served on several prominent children’s literature juries in India and internationally, including the Hans Christian Anderson Award (2026).

As part of our efforts to reach out to educational institutions across the country, Dr.Mizaj K V, faculty at IMSE was part of outreach sessions in two colleges in Cochin.

On 17th February, she spoke at Bhavan's College of Art and Commerce on the 'Interdisciplinary Character of Education as a Field'. In her session she explored how educational inquiry cannot be confined to a single discipline, but draws from sociology, psychology, philosophy, history, anthropology, and political theory. The discussion traced how questions of schooling, curriculum, learning, policy, and inequality require multiple conceptual tools.

On 18th February, she spoke at The Cochin College. Her session here was focused on 'Subjectivity and Educational Institutions from an interdisciplinary perspective'. The discussion was centered around how institutions do not merely regulate behavior but shape ways of thinking, feeling, and being. Drawing on insights from sociology, psychology, and philosophy, the session considered how subjectivities are produced through norms, evaluation systems, language practices, and everyday institutional routines. At the same time, we reflected on agency: on how individuals negotiate, resist, and reinterpret institutional expectations.
