HAI and HAIN are Hindi equivalents of IS and ARE respectively.

HAI (verb) is used for 'singular' subject. HAIN (also verb) is used for a 'plural' subject.

Compare (Examples) -

(1) Aadmi baitha HAI ( A person - male - is sitting), with
Aadmi baithe HAIN ( Some / many (i.e more than one) People (males) are sitting).

(2) Aadmi jata HAI ( A person is going - singular verb)
Aadmi jate HAIN ( More than one person is going - Plural sense).

Please note that in PLURAL sense the word AADMI is seldom used. The preferred word is LOG (meaning - 'many' people) over the word AADMI LOG, least to talk of the word AADMI.

Now coming to your main question, if the sentence is like
"Aadmi mej ke upar hai", then it means - A man is (lying / standing / sitting ) on the table. The sentence is correct in that sense.

If the word HAIN was to be used in the above sentence it must match the subject that is 'Aadmi', which generally indicates a 'male-singular' subject. It should be replaced with 'plural' subject - LOG / AADMI LOG .
So the plural sense would be -

Log (or Aadmi Log) mej ke upar hain.

Similarly, for your Second sentence AURAT GADI MEIN HAI which means "A lady is inside the vehicle". (Singular female verb).

To make it 'plural' -

Auraten gadi mein hain. (More than one women is inside the vehicle).
The subject (Aurat) has been changed into plural (Auraten) to support the use of HAIN.

Hope I have been able to reduce the confusion.

Good luck and enjoy learning HINDI.
