The National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit of Calcutta Girls’ B.T. College, Ballygunge, Kolkata organised a visit to its adopted village Gunjirpur, Mathurapur on 16th January 2026 as part of its regular extension and community outreach activities, in accordance with NSS rules and regulations.
A group of NSS volunteers, accompanied by the Programme Officer and faculty members, actively participated in the programme. The main objective of the visit was to strengthen the relationship between the college and the local community while promoting health awareness, education, and social responsibility.
During the visit, the volunteers conducted door-to-door interactions and organised awareness programmes on health, hygiene, sanitation, and environmental cleanliness. Special emphasis was given to personal hygiene, preventive healthcare, and maintaining a clean living environment.
A special awareness session on the Nipa virus was conducted to educate villagers about this emerging health concern. The volunteers explained the modes of transmission, symptoms such as fever, headache, respiratory problems, and encephalitis, and highlighted the importance of early medical consultation. Villagers were advised to avoid consumption of partially eaten or contaminated fruits, maintain proper hygiene, and immediately report any suspected illness to nearby health centres.
As part of the educational outreach, the NSS unit distributed school kits to school-going children of the village. The kits included essential learning materials such as notebooks, pens, pencils, erasers, and drawing items. This initiative aimed to encourage children to continue their education and support students from economically weaker sections. The children received the school kits with enthusiasm and gratitude.
The villagers actively participated in the programme and shared their concerns with the volunteers. The visit provided valuable exposure to rural life for the NSS volunteers and helped them understand social realities, thereby reinforcing the NSS motto “Not Me But You.”
