Médecins Sans Frontières ( Doctors without Borders) and Manipal University, India initiate "Global Health and Humanitarian Medicine Program"

This program aims to provide affordable, high quality, post graduate teaching in Global health to medical doctors working or planning to work in resource limited settings which will enable them to be eligible for DTM&H (Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene) examination approved by the Royal College of Physicians, UK.

International Vaccine Summit, organized by School of Public Health, Manipal University, concluded today. It was a first of its kind event, held over 2 days, and explored the field of Vaccinology like never before.

The resource personnel for the day included Dr. Anil Dutta (MD, Vice President Clinical and Medical (EM), R&D Dept., GSK, Belgium); Dr. Alberta Di Pasquale (MD, PhD Immunology, GSK, Belgium); Dr. Nadia Meyer (Epidemiology and Health Economics Team,GSK, Belgium); Dr. Camelia Marcos (Head of Evidence Based Medicine and Vaccines R&D, GSK, Belgium). The topics covered today were - Principles of disease eradication (Polio experience including India), Assessing vaccines in clinical trials and observational studies, Economic evaluation of vaccines, Life course immunization. Dr. Dutta also delivered a lecture on Pandemic preparedness, Newer innovations and the future of vaccine technology.

Dr Narayana Sabhahit, Registrar Manipal University was the Chief Guest for the event. Sir spoke about the importance of vaccinations in society and lauded the efforts taken by Dr. Sanjay Pattanshetty and the entire team of SOPH for their contributions in community services and public health programmes. Dr. Satishchandra (Surveillance Medical Office, WHO Mangalore) was the Guest of Honour and shared his experiences on operational challenges in immunisation campaigns. Dr. Shafiq from GSK, Mumbai office was also present at the event and interacted with the participants and offered insights on multiple topics during Q&A sessions.

The resource personnel for Day 1 included Dr. Anil Dutta (MD, Vice President Clinical and Medical (EM), R and D Dept., GSK, Belgium); Dr. Alberta Di Pasquale (MD, PhD Immunology, GSK, Belgium); Dr. Shaikh Shah Hussein (Asso. Professor, SOPH). Discussions and deliberations were held on a variety of topics such as - Intro to vaccinology, newer technologies in vaccines, Vaccine safety, vaccine hesitancy, AEFIs, vaccine manufacture, infrastructure and cold chain. Scientific presentations were followed by an open panel discussion.

Also present at the event were Dr. Sanjay Pattanshetty (SOPH), Dr. Nadia Meyer, Dr. Camelia Marcos and other officials and team members from GSK, Belgium and India, Faculty - Dept. of Community Medicine (KMC, Manipal), Faculty from Manipal Centre for Virus Research, Faculty and post graduates from SOPH and participants from engineering background and vaccine infrastructural support teams.
