Wi-Fi at SPCC

The Chowgule College Wi-Fi is designed for students, faculty, and staff who are mobile computer users. Mobile users may have wireless-enabled laptop computers, PDAs, or similar devices. Wi-Fi gives mobile users a way to connect to many of the same computing resources available to them from campus. The Wi-Fi has wired walkup ports in many classrooms, libraries, and all faculty offices, and wireless "hot spots" in and around many campus buildings. College IT Services About WiFi
College IT Services

WiFi (Wireless Fidelity) is a wireless network that uses radio waves, just like cell phones, televisions and radios do. In fact, communication across a wireless network is a lot like two-way radio communication. Here's what happens

1. A computer's wireless adapter translates data into a radio signal and transmits it using an antenna.
2. A wireless router receives the signal and decodes it. It sends the information to the Internet using a physical, wired Ethernet connection. The process also works in reverse, with the router receiving information from the Internet, translating it into a radio signal, and sending it to the computer's wireless adapter. The radios used for WiFi communication are very similar to the radios used for walkie-talkies, cell phones, and other devices. They can transmit and receive radio waves, and they can convert 1s and 0s into radio waves and convert the radio waves back into 1s and 0s. But WiFi radios have a few notable differences from other radios:

* They transmit at frequencies of 2.4 GHz or 5GHz. This frequency is considerably higher than the frequencies used for cell phones, walkie-talkies, and televisions. The higher frequency allows the signal to carry more data.
* They use 802.11 networking standards
About WiFi

A Wi-Fi-enabled device such as a PC, cell phone or PDA can connect to the Internet when within range of a wireless network connected to Internet. Wi-Fi allows LANs to be deployed without cabling for client devices, typically reducing the costs of network deployment and expansion. Spaces where cables cannot be run, such as outdoor areas, can host wireless LANs. You cannot connect directly to the Chowgule College network from off campus, but you can access many Chowgule College computing resources remotely via the Internet. The area covered by one or more interconnected access points is called a hotspot. The college campus is covered with 19 access points; the library is a hotspot zone with wireless internet and LAN services for students and staff. The playing campus along with the canteen is covered with an Omni directional antenna which has coverage of 500 mts distance with an angle of 360 degrees. The college corridor is also a hotspot zone with a directional antenna. The computer dept, science block, auditorium, and admin block are hotspot zones. All the access points are connected to LAN with a backbone bandwidth of 1000mbps switch. The LAN is handled with managed switch having a VLAN feature. Admin block and library are connected through fiber for high availability and trouble-free LAN connectivity.
