Concourse 2015 Theme:
"WOMEN AND WORKPLACE"

An article dated 9th October 2014 by Huffington Post states that 4% top CEOs in the world are women and India has the highest percentage of women top CEOs at 8%. This is interesting data given the fact that women in UK were given the right to vote 20 years before India. The journey of women from domestic slavery to ‘feminine’ professions such as teaching and nursing to now chairing top positions in organizations is an arduous one yet the most benign forms of a dramatic social change. Given this history, it becomes imperative to address the complex ways in which gender manifests itself in the Indian workplace, today. Issues such as safety of women, inequality in wages, the glass ceiling, social stigmas and pressures for women to quit the workforce continue to nibble at the performance and growth of women in the workforce.

After a good beginning with “leaning in,” “having it all,” and “opting out”, there seems to be a need for a renewed conversation on gender and the workplace. A dialogue on recognizing and defying stereotypes related to gender and gender roles ought to be initiated at the School and University level. Infact, Companies that have adapted to the idea of hiring ‘people’ rather than genders are the ones that are doing well. Infinitesimal innovations in business and changes in organizations and families are turning around hurdles into opportunities for working women. Cabs for women, crèches and day care centres in the workplace, team leadership positions for women, socially befitting HR policies, and mobile apps for women safety are a just a few alterations that are contributing to an affable workplace for people of all genders.

The theme of Women and the Workplace thus deems fit for CONCOURSE as the management meet provides a platform for a dialogue amongst young people who in the course of the event will apply their minds in creating solutions for sustainable gender friendly organizations and a genial society of tomorrow.
