In 2019, Aggies Go Global and the NMSU Indian Resources and Development Program collaborated on a truly momentous and unique experience! Ten students representing tribes throughout New Mexico embarked on a journey to the Ixcan region of Guatemala. These students shared conversations with local indigenous leaders and their communities about their lived experiences, land/water rights, and how interwoven the history of the region is to their cultures of conservation today. This month’s series of student features presents: the Indigenous Leadership Exchange!

Let's take a pause from group trips to showcase some stellar individuals!
Lucas Rivera is a graduating senior at NMSU majoring in civil engineering. He shares, "December 2018/January 2019 I had the privilege of spending ten days in New Zealand and twenty-one days in Indonesia. During my time in New Zealand I spent time planting trees as a volunteer as well as exploring the South Island. During my time in Indonesia, I spent time building a kindergarten for the local children there as well as exploring the island of Bali (and learning how to surf!). In my travels, I have learned that the world is both a lot bigger and a lot smaller than we think it is. I urge anyone with the desire to travel to take that leap and make it happen, when you are 85 years old and reminiscing, you will never regret it. Also--make it a common practice to find ways to support the local cultures you visit and research ways to ensure your travel there is beneficial to them as opposed to harmful."

Camila Prieto is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics and Agricultural Business with a minor in Business Administration and Marketing. She grew up in Nuevo Casas Grandes—a small community in Chihuahua, Mexico where surrounded by agriculture, she was inspired to move to another country to seek a related degree. Camila tries to be as involved in the university as she can as she has served as an Ambassador for the College of Agricultural Consumer and Environmental Sciences and is a member of the Agricultural Economics Club. She likes to keep herself busy and is passionate about opportunities that allow her to grow personally and professionally by living new and different experiences.

Camila delivered a refreshingly personal presentation on “Economic Independence: Vital for Voice and Dignity” where she spoke on her background of connecting with her communities, traveling beyond them, and seeking ways to grow and give back to them more. Through those conversations, she was able to connect with other international speakers and has shared how she has been able to converse with her friends and family on the long-standing influences of culture from what you eat to deciding on careers that keep food on the table. “I am also able to help people surrounding me to look at the world from a different perspective and know that there is a lot out there waiting for us to explore.”

We commend you for keeping your long-standing sense of purpose and community fueling the hustle you have, Camila!

Stacia McIntosh is completing her doctoral program in Reproductive Physiology, Molecular Biology, and Toxicology at NMSU. Stacia’s goal is to gain a better understanding of the effects of environmental toxins on human and livestock pregnancies to not only mitigate pregnancy losses in these groups, but also improve sustainability in agriculture, and reduce environmental impact.

In spring of 2019, Stacia gave an incredibly informative and eye-opening presentation on s*x education in public schools throughout the United States. This also provided a springboard of discussion on how women’s health care and practices are influenced by larger societal events and environments.

You’re doing tremendous work, Stacia, and we hope that it all leads to those three letters following your name, but most especially, more avenues beyond the university for your humanitarian heart and bright mind to continue reaching others!

Grace Igwe is pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering and another in Environmental Science. Though different disciplines, her career goals are to introduce more sustainable practices to mechanical engineering and combating both humanitarian and engineering issues. She enjoys meeting people from different countries and learning about their cultures and traditions, so having also traveled through Aggies Without Limits, she’s been able to integrate all of these learning experiences surrounding people, the environment, and the literal structures that keep humans and nature good neighbors to one another.

Living an eclectic and well-rounded experience herself (she knows Japanese and French!), Grace shared her voice at the 2019 WEF conference by presenting on “Experiencing Self-Fullness”. Equally inspired by the full experiences of other women around her, she shared, “The quote that [a poet and speaker] said, that ‘You’re so blessed to be a woman because you get to experience the world through your heart’…I never thought of it that way.”

You’re a remarkable young woman, Grace, with much to contribute--whether building connections between people and environment, or the ways we understand one another among cultures so we can build that more connected world.
