Sikkim National Law University recently had the privilege of hosting a special lecture by Prof. Sarfaraz Ahmed Khan, Professor at the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS), Kolkata, on the pressing and deeply significant theme, "Combatting S*x Trafficking: Role of Youth." The session brought together students, faculty members, and researchers for an engaging and thought-provoking discussion on one of the most critical socio-legal challenges of our time.
Prof. Khan delivered an insightful address highlighting the complex and transnational nature of s*x trafficking, emphasizing its roots in socio-economic vulnerabilities, lack of awareness, and systemic inequalities. He underscored the urgent need for a multi-pronged approach involving legal reforms, effective law enforcement, and community participation.
A significant portion of the lecture was devoted to discussing the legal framework in India aimed at combating trafficking. He explained the key statutory provisions and legal mechanisms addressing trafficking-related offences, as well as the broader policy landscape, while highlighting the need for stronger implementation and coordination among enforcement and welfare agencies.
Prof. Khan also presented case studies from his own research work, which particularly captured the attention of the students and sparked a lively discussion. These real-life examples provided practical insights into the challenges faced in combating trafficking and demonstrated the impact of effective interventions.
A key focus of the lecture was the transformative role that youth can play in combating trafficking. Prof. Khan encouraged students to act as agents of change by spreading awareness, engaging in policy advocacy, supporting rehabilitation initiatives, and contributing to research in this domain. He also stressed the importance of sensitivity, ethical responsibility, and informed activism while addressing such issues.
The session witnessed active participation from students, who raised pertinent questions and shared their perspectives, making the interaction both dynamic and enriching. The lecture served as an important platform to sensitize future legal professionals and reinforce their role in promoting justice, human rights, and dignity.
Sikkim National Law University remains committed to fostering meaningful academic discourse and encouraging its students to engage with contemporary socio-legal issues.
