Bright, Tasty and Heartfelt: How we celebrated Maslenitsa (aka Pancake week)

On February 22, students of SamSMU came together to celebrate Maslenitsa, aka one of the most joyful and colorful traditions welcoming the arrival of spring.

Despite the light frost, the celebration was warm in spirit and full of positive emotions!

A special activity was organised where students could test their strength and agility, take part in friendly competitions, and lowkenuienly have fun together.

The program included traditional folk games and entertainment from tug-of-war contests to lively round dances, creating a true festive atmosphere.

Of course, no Maslenitsa is complete without delicious pancakes! Students enjoyed sweet treats, sang songs, and happily said goodbye to winter.

Thank you to everyone who shared this wonderful day with us. Spring, new plans, and exciting events are ahead!

Maslenitsa may be over, but the bright memories and emotions remain!!!

International Students have visited the “Workshop Theatre”

The Organisational Department of the International Institute of SamSMU has arranged a cultural visit for international students to the Samara Theatre for Children and Youth "Workshop Theatre".

Founded in 2018 by graduates and teachers of the Samara State Institute of Culture, "Workshop Theatre" is a young and dynamic theatre with a diverse, multi-genre repertoire. In 2025, the theatre opened its own building at 15 Chernorechenskaya Street, becoming an important cultural venue in the city.

This time, students attended the musical comedy “Province”, basically a production about life choices, values, and the challenges of following one’s dreams. Medical students were especially proud to learn that the author of the play is Andrei Kolesnikov - a well-known Samara doctor, poet, and composer.

Students from Egypt, Lebanon, Algeria, India, and Tunisia took part in the event. While they are actively studying Russian, experiencing a theatrical performance in the language offers a unique and immersive cultural challenge. Such visits help deepen their understanding of Russian culture, traditions, and language, while also developing their appreciation of the arts.

Notably, this is the second visit of International Institute students to the theatre this academic year. In November, they attended the wordless performance “Plastic Mysteries.”

Fifth-year student Nourhan shared his impressions:
"Actually I like it so much! It was such an interesting thing. Actors delivered their roles naturally, and the emotions felt genuine. It was engaging from beginning to end".

Winter in our hearts and sleds in our hands

SamSMU students spent their winter holidays in a healthy and active way on a winter wellness trip. The event brought together 50 energetic and enthusiastic students from different institutes and academic years.

“It was a great trip! We combined active winter recreation with relaxation and good company. We were lucky with the weather cuz it was sunny and snowy, so we definitely didn’t leave without beautiful photos and pleasant memories. The trip was a complete success,” shared Dinara Nizamova, a student of the Institute of Clinical Medicine.

The cultural and leisure programme combined active outdoor recreation, outdoor and board games, creative workshops and many other activities. Students went skiing through a snow-covered forest, sleds, relaxed in warming thermal baths and ended their days with musical bingo.
“This was my first trip during my studies, and it exceeded all expectations. I was able to fully enjoy both the rich program and moments of tranquillity. It was exactly the balance of activity and relaxation that I needed,” said Andrei Kozlov, a student of the Institute of Preventive Medicine.

We are confident that the vivid impressions and boost of energy gained during the winter trip became a great start to the new academic semester. May these warm memories inspire you and motivate you to new achievements. Have a great semester!

Science is the optimal way to regularly update your knowledge

Ahead of Russian Science Day, celebrated on February 8, SamSMU is hosting its traditional Science Week. Continuing our series of interviews is Nikita Likholatov, a pediatric trauma surgeon and orthopedist at the Pediatric Traumatology and Orthopedics Department of SamSMU Clinics.

When did you decide to pursue a career in science?

During my student years, when I started attending the Student Scientific Circle of the Department of Traumatology, Orthopedics, and Extreme Surgery named after Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences A.F. Krasnov. The department has its own competition team, thanks to which I began to master manual skills, and the need arose to deepen my theoretical knowledge. Moreover, I understood that for me, as a student at that time, science was the most effective way to find the most interesting field within traumatology and orthopedics.

What scientific achievement of yours do you consider the most significant?

A new method for osteosynthesis of the patella in cases of its fractures. It was developed by the department's staff and applied in treating patients with this injury as part of my dissertation research. The method has proven itself well in clinical practice. Its advantages include the possibility of early physical activation of patients and early rehabilitation, which reduces the recovery time for limb function and helps prevent the development of degenerative post-traumatic processes in the joint.

How has science helped you in your professional activities?

Science continues to help in many ways to this day. It has shaped a certain critical mindset regarding information available from various resources, as well as skills in systematizing knowledge.

Why is it important for students and young specialists to engage in science?

Science is the optimal way to regularly update one's knowledge in the discipline in which a specialist actively works. By engaging in science, a researcher is in constant search of the latest relevant studies and new information, stays aware of trends in modern medicine, all while maintaining a critical mindset.

SamSMU Journals Confirm High Status in Updated HAC List

The university's scientific publications — «Science and Innovations in Medicine» and «Postgraduate Bulletin of the Volga Region» — have been consistently included in this list for several years, which is a sign of their high scientific quality and compliance with all the ministry's requirements.

Both SamSMU publications are multidisciplinary scientific medical journals. They publish original research and review articles, clinical observation materials, and works in related specialties.

For SamSMU, the presence of its own journals in the HAC list is of strategic importance. This not only confirms the authority of the publications but also directly supports the scientific activities of the university's staff. According to current regulations, to be admitted to defend a candidate's or doctoral dissertation, applicants are required to publish a number of scientific articles.

Having its own peer-reviewed journals included in the HAC list creates an important and convenient platform for university scientists to publish their research results.

Discovering Language Through Culture

Students of the International Institute of SamSMU became active participants in an Open Russian Language Lesson for foreigners, held at the Samara Regional Universal Scientific Library.

Alongside attending other Samara events throughout the academic year, the future medical professionals are regular guests of the Open Russian Language Lessons. The cooperation program with cultural institutions helps students adapt to life in Russia.

After classes at the library, students have the opportunity to visit exhibitions in the exhibition hall of the Open Reading Space. They visited the recently opened exhibition «2A Graphics», featuring works by Samara architects and artists Pavel Starostin and Evgeny Travkin. This continued their immersion into Russian culture, this time through visual art.

Visiting current exhibitions makes the language learning process vibrant and multifaceted, fulfilling the university's important mission of harmoniously integrating future doctors into Russia's cultural and historical landscape.
