CSIR-IHBT Scientist and Research Scholars Visit Kashmir University Botanical Garden and KASH-Herbarium

Srinagar, September 29: Dr. Rajesh Kumar Singh, Senior Scientist, CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (CSIR-IHBT), Palampur, Himachal Pradesh, along with research scholars, visited the Kashmir University Botanical Garden (KUBG) and KASH-Herbarium of the Department of Botany, University of Kashmir, today.

During the visit, demonstration sessions were conducted by Akhtar H. Malik, Botanist, focusing on the rich plant biodiversity of the Kashmir region and the significance of herbarium collections in the documentation, identification, conservation and scientific study of plant diversity.

The visitors were also briefed about the role and importance of botanical gardens in plant diversity conservation, ex-situ conservation, education, research and public awareness. The significance of maintaining living collections of plants and their value for academic and scientific research was also highlighted.

Special emphasis was placed on the medicinal plants of Kashmir, their traditional uses and importance in healthcare. Discussions also focused on the need for their sustainable utilisation, scientific documentation and long-term conservation in view of increasing pressures on natural plant resources.

Students from Govt Degree College Zanskar Ladakh vist to KASH Herbarium and Kashmir University Botanical Garden of Department of Botany University of kashmir

As part of their educational tour, 35 students along with 5 faculty members from Government Degree College Zanskar,Ladakh visited the KASH Herbarium and Kashmir University Botanical Garden (KUBG), Department of Botany, University of Kashmir.

During the visit, demonstration sessions were conducted by Akhtar H. Malik focusing on the rich biodiversity of the region and the significance of herbarium collections in the documentation, identification, conservation, and scientific study of plant diversity. The students were introduced to various aspects of plant identification, preservation, and herbarium techniques.

The role and importance of botanical garden in the conservation of plant diversity, ex-situ conservation, education, research, and public awareness were also discussed. Special emphasis was placed on medicinal plants of kashmir and their traditional uses, importance in healthcare, and the need for their sustainable utilization and conservation.

The visit provided the students with valuable practical exposure and enhanced their understanding of biodiversity, botanical research, herbarium science, plant conservation, botanical gardens, and medicinal plants. The educational tour proved to be an informative and enriching experience for both the students and faculty members.

Indo-US Workshop on Protein Science Concludes at Department of Botany, University of Kashmir

Srinagar, September 3: The Department of Botany, University of Kashmir (KU) successfully concluded a two-day Indo-US workshop titled “Beyond the Fold: Understanding Protein Structure, Dynamics and Interactions”, organised from 1–2 September 2026. The workshop brought together researchers, faculty members, research scholars and students to deliberate on contemporary developments in protein science and structural biology.

The workshop focused on the interdisciplinary understanding of proteins beyond their static three-dimensional structures, highlighting the significance of protein dynamics, molecular interactions, protein folding, stability and structure–function relationships in modern biological research.

The scientific programme provided participants with an opportunity to engage with emerging concepts and methodologies in structural biology and to understand how advances in computational, biophysical and molecular approaches are transforming the study of proteins. The sessions also facilitated discussions on contemporary research challenges and explored potential avenues for collaborative research between Indian and US researchers.

Dr. Neela H. Yennawar, Professor and researcher at The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State University), USA, was the main resource person for the workshop. Other resource persons included Dr. Fayaz Ahmad Malik, IIIM, Srinagar; Dr. Aijaz-ul-Hamid Wani, Department of Biotechnology, University of Kashmir; and Dr. Javid Yousuf, CIRI, University of Kashmir. The delivered lectures and interacted with participants on various aspects of protein structure, dynamics and molecular interactions.

At the valedictory function, Prof. Naseer Iqbal, Chief Guest, emphasised the importance of organising such workshops for promoting scientific interaction, knowledge exchange and research collaboration. He appreciated the efforts of the Department of Botany in providing researchers and students with exposure to emerging areas of biological sciences and encouraged participants to utilise such academic platforms for developing innovative research collaborations.

Prof. Manzoor A. Shah, Acting Head, Department of Botany, also addressed the gathering and highlighted the significance of the workshop in strengthening academic and research linkages. He emphasised the importance of exposing students and early-career researchers to contemporary developments and emerging approaches in protein science and structural biology.

Dr. Rifat John, Organising Secretary, presented the two-day programme schedule during the valedictory function and highlighted the major scientific sessions and activities conducted during the workshop.

The workshop reflected the Department of Botany’s commitment to promoting international scientific collaboration, advanced research training and interdisciplinary approaches in the biological sciences. It provided students and early-career researchers with a valuable platform to interact with experts and gain exposure to recent advances in protein research.

The workshop concluded with fruitful scientific discussions and reaffirmed the importance of collaborative and interdisciplinary approaches in addressing emerging questions related to protein structure, dynamics and molecular interactions.

The Department of Botany proudly congratulates Dr. Showkat A. Gojery on the successful completion and award of his PhD degree.

Dr. Gojery carried out his PhD under the able supervision of Prof. Manzoor A. Shah, working on the fascinating research theme, “Understanding Local Adaptation of Capsella bursa-pastoris Along Elevational Gradients in Relation to Climate Change.” His work has not only contributed meaningfully to our understanding of plant adaptation in a changing climate but has also earned high appreciation from the expert committee for its scientific rigor, relevance, and international scope.

What makes this journey particularly remarkable is the way Dr. Gojery transformed his PhD into a truly global academic experience. As part of his research, he worked at ETH Zurich, Switzerland, and Michigan State University, USA, and was awarded two prestigious international fellowships. He further represented his research on several international platforms, including BES in Liverpool, England; InvaCost in Morocco, Africa; and SER in Darwin, Australia, building valuable academic collaborations and strengthening the international visibility of our department.

His scholarly contributions are equally commendable. He has published high-quality research in prestigious journals, including BioScience and Science of the Total Environment

Beyond publications and academic milestones, Dr. Gojery has demonstrated what it means to carry the name of one’s department beyond geographical boundaries. Through his research, collaborations, international fellowships, and participation in global scientific forums, he has proudly connected the Department of Botany with the wider international scientific community.

The Department of Botany is immensely proud of this achievement and wishes Dr. Showkat A. Gojery every success in his future academic and professional endeavours. May this be the beginning of an even greater journey of discovery, collaboration, and impact.

His doctoral research, entitled “Physiological and Metabolic Responses of Buckwheat (Fagopyrum spp.) under Drought Stress,” was carried out under the able supervision of Prof. Aijaz A. Department of Botany, University of Kashmir is pleased to announce the Two-Day International Conference on "Plant Resilience in a Changing Climate: From Molecules to Ecosystems", scheduled to be held on 7–8 September 2026 at the University of Kashmir, Srinagar. Organized by the Plant Molecular Biology Laboratory, the conference aims to bring together leading national and international scientists, researchers, academicians, industry professionals, and students to discuss recent advances in plant resilience, climate adaptation, sustainable agriculture, ecosystem restoration, and climate-smart technologies.
The conference will feature keynote lectures, invited talks, oral and poster presentations, and interactive scientific discussions by eminent experts from India and abroad, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations and innovative solutions to address the challenges of climate change.

The Centre for Biodiversity & Taxonomy, Department of Botany, University of Kashmir, inaugurated a three-day workshop titled "Rehabilitating Alpine Grasslands of the Western Himalaya: Connecting Science, Policy and Communities." The programme aims to promote dialogue on the conservation and sustainable restoration of alpine grassland ecosystems through collaborative efforts involving researchers, policymakers, and local communities.The workshop is jointly organised in collaboration with the G.B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment, CSIR–Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology, University of Ladakh, and HNB Garhwal University. It is supported by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of India, under the National Mission on Himalayan Studies (NMHS).

Addressing the inaugural session, Vice-Chancellor, University of Kashmir, Prof. Nilofer Khan, underscored the importance of strengthening partnerships among academic institutions, government agencies, and local communities to ensure the long-term conservation of fragile Himalayan ecosystems.
Mr. Tawheed Ahmad Deva (IFS), Regional Wildlife Warden, Kashmir, highlighted the growing environmental challenges confronting alpine landscapes and stressed that meaningful community participation is essential for safeguarding Himalayan biodiversity.
In their remarks, Dean Research, Prof. Bashir Ahmad Ganaie, and Head, Department of Botany, Prof. Aijaz Ahmad Wani**, emphasised the vital role of interdisciplinary research and collaborative approaches in addressing pressing ecological concerns.

Welcoming the participants, Prof. Anzar Ahmad Khuroo, Organising Secretary of the workshop, stated that the event is designed to provide a platform for discussions on the ecological significance of alpine grasslands, current conservation challenges, and science-based strategies for their restoration through stakeholder engagement. The three-day programme includes expert lectures, technical presentations, hands-on training sessions, interactive discussions, and field-based activities focusing on biodiversity conservation, ecological restoration, and the sustainable management of alpine grasslands across the Western Himalaya.

The inaugural session was conducted by Prof. Anzar Ahmad Khuroo, while the vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Aijaz Hassan Ganie, Co-Principal Investigator and faculty member, Department of Botany, North Campus, University of Kashmir.
