Arts College, Villupuram is a Government Higher Education Institution, managed by the Director of Collegiate Education, Chennai. This College was started on 3-7-1968, and was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of Tamilnadu Dr. C.N. ANNADURAI popularly known among Tamilians as “ANNA”
At that period of time Villupuram was a part of South Arcot District and was educationally backward

and no institution for higher education was available there. In order to cater the aspirations of the local population, the Tamilnadu government started this institution in 1968 and 320 students enrolled in pre-university courses. From its inception, the College has been catering the needs of the people in and around Villupuram, who are socially and economically backward. Most of the students of past and present are first graduate’s from poor families. This institution has made appreciable contribution in making large number of women graduates, for whom the school education itself was a dream long back. Till 1972, the college was functioning at Kamaraj Municipal High School, Villlupuram and from 1973 onwards the College started functioning in the present campus.

ZOOLOGY DEPARTMENT EDUCATIONAL TOUR
Arignar Anna Government Arts College, Department of Zoology organized One Day Field Visit for 3rd year B.Sc. Zoology students for visiting Parangipettai Fish landing center, CAS in Marine Biology Annamalai University and Pichavaram Mangrove Forest on 29-04-2022.
1. Fish landing centre visit:
The students had the rare opportunity to visit the Annankovil fish landing centre in Parangipettai and we gained more knowledge about the diversity of marine fishes including cartilaginous fishes (sharks, skates and rays) and bony fishes (sardines, Indian mackerels, snappers, tuna,etc) . This place is an important fish landing centre in Cuddalore district as it supports the economy of local fishermen and others also.
2. Museum visit:
Followed by a fish landing centre visit, we called on to the museum at CAS in Marine Biology, Annamalai University. In this museum, all kinds of rare marine specimens are kept preserved and displayed neatly. We, the students acquired the knowledge on the important collection of specimens of Invertebrates and Chordates. We saw the whale’s baleen plates and vertebrae and the sea turtle’s carapace.
Further, the students were also explained about the Instrumentation Laboratory and DST Facility and Lab of Ornamental fish culture. Then, we visited the Shrimp culture Ponds and their automatic feeder method which was useful to directly observe the operation of aquaculture farms.
3. Pichavaram mangrove forest visit:
Finally, we went to Pichavaram Mangrove forest to study their canopy and their association with flora and fauna. This mangrove forest is located between the Vellar estuary in the north and the Pazhayar estuary in the south. This is an ecotourism place for the scenic beauty of mangrove forests.

Zoological Association Days & Workshop on Geological time scale –2022, March 28th

Zoological Association Days & Workshop on “Geological time scale: An overview” was organized by Department of Zoology. This event took place on 28.03.2022 at Thiruvalluvar Arangam in our College campus. The workshop was initiated by our faculty members Dr. K. Parthasarathi, Dr.S. Murugan and Dr. S. Arularasn, Dr. M. Kasinathan, Dr. N. Arunpandiyan who lead the organizing committee. In this workshop our college principal Dr. R. Sivakumar gave a presidential address. And the Special Lecture was delivered by Dr. V. Ravi Associate Professor, Govt. Arts College for Women’s (Autonomous), Kumbakonam. Nearly 250 student’s community and other department faculty members participated in this Workshop. The participants were enlightened with knowledge on Evolution of Animals with special reference to Geological Time Period.
