A new eruption just started on the Reykjanes peninsula in Iceland, just NE of Grindavik. It's exactly where we saw highly increased earthquake activity (related to the d**e intrusion) over the last months.

Eldgos er hafið norðan við Grindavík. Miðja gossins er staðsett nálægt Sundhnúksgígum um 4 km norðaustur af Grindavík. Eldgosið hófst kl. 22.17 í kjölfar skjálftahrinu sem hófst um kl. 21. Þyrla Landhelgisgæslunnar fer í loftið innan skamms til þess að staðfesta nákvæma staðsetningu og stærð eldgossins. Nánari upplýsingar verðar aðgengilegar fljótlega. 🔥🔎🔬 GMPV CAMPFIRES are back!

After a pause, the Geochemistry, Mineralogy, Petrology, and Volcanology division’s early career scientists talks (EGU Campfires) are back!

The first session in 2023 will be a special relaunch event. It will be held on Thursday 16th November at 4pm CET on Zoom.

For this special edition, our speaker is Xin Zhong (PostDoc @ Freie Universität Berlin, Germany), who has been awarded the 2023 Division Outstanding Early Career Scientist Award.

This Campfire will also be the occasion for the GMPV ECS team to share some exciting news about future actions and to present the new “ECS Tips” Campfires to be launched in early 2024…

🚨New Paper Alert🚨

In this experimental study, led by our Marco Knüver, we studied the interaction of an ascending magma with the rocks that are surrounding it. In case of Vesuvius (and many other volcanoes) these rocks are mostly limestones. The heating of these limestones to magmatic temperatures leads to their chemical decomposition and to the release of CO2. This CO2 might alter the eruptive style of an eruption (i.e., more explosive). The results of this study indicate that even if these interactions happens very shallow (near-surface), the CO2 will be released in very short times (~several minutes). This shows that the hazard of tephra fall out is increased around these "type of volcanoes", that are sitting on a thick limestone crust.

🚨New Paper Alert🚨
In this study, our Silvia Massaro led the development of a user-friendly online multi-choice questionnaire within the Eurovolc project community. Analyzing the answers, they extracted a prototype checklist for guiding the design of volcanic crisis exercises in the future.
The main lessons learnt regard the need i) to increase training activities involving people exposed to volcanic hazards and media, ii) to improve external communication tools (between players and public/media), equipment and protocols.

Our Marco Knüver lead a review on mineralizations and skarn formation at three alkaline volcanic systems: , and . They focused on major and acc. mineral phases and magma differentiation in the peripheral parts of the magma chambers. 🌋

🚨 New Paper Alert 🚨

Our Fabio Dioguardi co-authored a paper led by Tobias Dürig (University of Iceland) on the optimization of mass eruption rates by simple plume models.
They tested 6 simple plume models against data from the new IVESPA database and prescribe strategies to improve the predictive performance of these simplified plume models. 🌋
