What an intense and inspiring evening to open our DOC DAY edition #4!

Last night, in partnership with Female Views - Bozen/Bolzano , we screened SILVER, the internationally acclaimed feature-length debut by Polish director Natalia Koniarz, followed by a very insightful Q&A. Here are some impressions we’d like to share!

Thank you so much, Natalia, for taking the time to answer all our questions, and thanks to everyone who came to the first film of the DOC DAY 2026/2027 programme for being part of this evening.

DOC DAY is an initiative by the Film Association of South Tyrol, supported by the Autonomous Province of South Tyrol. Curated by Emanuele Vernillo, the programme brings six internationally acclaimed documentaries to the big screen in Bolzano. From October 2026 to March 2027, we show one film a month at the Filmclub Capitol, including a Q&A and other activities, co-hosted or organised with local partners.

Cerro Rico, Potosí, Bolivia. The richest silver mine in history. For five centuries the mine has given back silver and kept bodies: over eight million died there. Silver in exchange for life.

In SILVER the gaze of the filmmakers descends into the darkness of the earth and stays there: we breathe the dust and catch the smell. The cinematography is by Stanisław Cuske, already credited as camera operator on The Zone of Interest.

The editing (Yaël Bitton) moves between two worlds: the depths and the daylight above. Outside, children go to school, play football, run down the ridge of the mountain, while the mine’s blasts echo all around.

October is getting closer, and so is the first event of DOC DAY #4!

SILVER, directed by Polish filmmaker Natalia Koniarz, opens our 2026/2027 programme on October 8 at Filmclub Capitol , followed by a Q&A in collaboration with our partner Female Views - Bozen/Bolzano .

Don't miss this multi-awarded documentary, which premiered at Krakow Film Festival in 2025 and won the Silver Horn along with five other awards. Since then, it has travelled the international festival circuit, collecting further recognition for its directing, cinematography and more.

Natalia Koniarz / 2025 / 79'

Since colonial times, millions of people have died in the silver mines of Potosí, Bolivia. In the 21st century, working conditions there are still deadly, while the profits are reaped by international corporations. For the people who live in the area, children included, the mines are their entire lives. This documentary shows their daily routine, underground and on the surface, without embellishment. It offers a glimpse into a world where survival depends on the chunk of precious metal chipped away by the sweat of a miner's brow. The exploitation of resources goes hand in hand with the exploitation of people, and the film brings them out of darkness and oblivion, if only for a moment.

DOC DAY is an initiative by the FAS – Film Association of South Tyrol, supported by the Autonomous Province of Bolzano.
All films are shown in their original language with English subtitles.
