I'm really glad to share this paper, which summarizes the efforts of my young and highly skilled collaborators (Francesco Cazzadori, Silvio Reginato, Alessandro Facchin), and features Daniel Forrer from CNR-ICMATE Istituto di Chimica della Materia Condensata e di Tecnologie per l'Energia . Based on EC-STM and computational analysis, dioxygen electroreduction does not follow an inner-sphere electron transfer mechanism, as observed in metal porphyrins where a preliminary M-O2 bond is required. Instead, it follows an outer-sphere mechanism, involving the precoordination of O2 induced by the protonated hydrogen within the macrocycle cavity.
