Scrivere mi è mancato tantissimo. E spero di tornare a farlo con un po’ di costanza, per condividere i pensieri che mi accompagnano nel mio percorso, e ovviamente per parlare dei temi e metodi della ricerca che mi appassionano. E lo farò su Substack. Sia per essere quanto più indipendente possibile da come l’algoritmo si sveglia, sia perché vorrei avere uno spazio dove condividere contenuti di diverso tipo rispetto a quello che offrono i vari Instagram e Facebook (es. seminari, podcast).

THE ACADEMIC EQUIVALENCE OF "WE SHOULD START A BAND" TO STUDY MENTAL HEALTH IN THE LGBTQIA+ COMMUNITY

Today like always, we face a lot of societal challenges concerning human rights and equality. I want to do my little part to contribute and, as a scientist, I feel a best way of doing so is... science.
And one of the things I enjoy the most of our job as academicians is that I get the chance to meet and work with people I sincerely appreciate and aligned in these values and interests.

When I first met Silvia Tempia Valenta, we were both medical students with strong interest for mental health and both using social media to raise awareness on such topic. About six years later, we both graduated and we finally got the chance to start a band together! And then, we got Anna Bornioli, a favorite colleague for the "we-should-write-a-paper-together"-talks, involved as well!

The International Journal of Social Psychiatry has just published our article "Investigating Eating Symptoms in the LGBTQIA+ Population: Do Discrimination and Adverse Conditions Matter?".

The literature on mental health in the LGBTQIA+ community in Italy is still very scarce, and with this piece we aimed to contribute to the literature with
(1) to investigate the association between different groups based on gender identity and sexual orientation and experiencing eating symptoms, and
(2) to explore the extent to which self-perceived discrimination and adverse conditions explain this association.

We found evidence that people from the LGBTQIA+ community may be at higher risk of symptoms of eating disorders, and that part of this risk may be explained by the discrimination they experience and the societal climate they face. While arguing on the underlying mechanisms, we acknowledge we definitely need methodological improvements to reinforce the evidence, both in study design and assessments.

Our findings are not surprising, but may (or may not) be surprising that we have very little scientific evidence on this mattter yet, in 2024. There is a long way to go. Let's get there!

Pursuing this very PhD, with the team who made me fall in love with research, in the institution where my scientific adventure has started by case with an Erasmus+ exchange internship, on the topic I am most passionate about, was such a big dream of mine.

Every PhD is a unique journey. And I am happy that mine, from its start until its end, with all the ups and downs that are part of every journey, reflected me, my weaknesses and my strengths, my values and my interests. My-entire-self. This could not be anyone’s else journey.

And I am happy I could pursue and share this journey with Lex Burdorf, Suzan Robroek and Merel Schuring in my beloved team of Occupational Health of the Department of Public Health, at the Erasmus MC.

I talk a lot. My supervisory team felt it necessary to give the committee members a heads-up, so they could prepare a solid strategy to keep my word count in check during the defense! Despite that, and my social media activity, took me more than two months to find the words to announce here that on September 24th, I presented my PhD journey and defended my PhD thesis entitled “Causes and consequences of mental health problems among university students and workers”.

I am still overwhelmed by the emotions and all the love and support I received by family, friends, colleagues and even people who followed my projects on social media and contributed to make this journey so meaningful to me.

And there are so many thoughts and acknowledgments I want to share about this. And the time will definitely come soon. But right now, I am just peacefully enjoying the fact that I am right where I dreamed of being, for years. And I feel so lucky, privileged and thankful for such opportunity. I could not wish for a better closure of such important chapter of my life.

Nella mia tesi di dottorato, ho menzionato che "il mio privilegio è profondamente radicato nelle circostanze della mia nascita — sia nel luogo che nel tempo. Essere nato in una parte privilegiata del mondo, specialmente come cittadino europeo, è una benedizione di cui sono consapevole."

Ho scoperto la mia passione per la ricerca scientifica durante il mio primo tirocinio Erasmus+ nei Paesi Bassi. Come studente di medicina in scambio all' MC, ho lavorato al mio primo articolo scientifico insieme a Suzan Robroek e Lex Burdorf. Rotterdam non era affatto la mia prima scelta, ma tre mesi sono stati sufficienti per convincermi che volevo intraprendere un dottorato nel campo della salute mentale nei Paesi Bassi, con quel team, in quell’instituto. Non lo sapevo allora, ma quell'articolo sarebbe diventato un capitolo della mia tesi di dottorato.

Durante il mio secondo tirocinio Erasmus+ presso l'UMCG di Groningen, ho lavorato con una delle mie scienziate preferite nel campo, Ute Bültmann, sul protocollo per la raccolta dei dati che ho utilizzato, durante il mio terzo, quarto e quinto tirocinio Erasmus+, ancora una volta presso l'Erasmus MC, per sviluppare la mia tesi di laurea in medicina, che si è poi evoluta in altri due capitoli della mia tesi di dottorato.

Alcuni anni dopo, sono stato contattato da Ilaria Bassanini, una studentessa di medicina italiana interessata a uno stage di ricerca nell’ambito del tirocinio Erasmus+. Ero molto entusiasta di supportare una giovane collega nell'intraprendere la stessa esperienza che è stata così significativa per me. Ci siamo divertiti molto insieme e abbiamo scritto un bell'articolo, anch’esso parte della mia tesi di dottorato, che è stato accettato per pubblicazione sul Journal of Affective Disorders Reports!

Grazie all’Erasmus ho trovato la mia strada, il mio team di mentori, la mia vocazione. Tutto questo meraviglioso percorso lo devo "al Progetto Erasmus, il più grande dono che gli europei si siano fatti, perché ha reso questo traguardo immaginabile prima ancora che fosse possibile."

Sono anche molto grato e orgoglioso di UniCa - Università degli Studi di Cagliari, dove ho completato i miei studi universitari, per aver investito così tanto nei progetti di scambio.

Earlier this week I gave a quick lecture to medical students from the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore () at Policlinico Agostino Gemelli (). Someone in the audience (.z32) made me notice that I tend to gesticulate quite a bit by realizing this video with a matching music background. But you know, this is one of the Italian ways to show engagement!

Education is one of my career goals and probably the duty I find the most fulfilling in my work. Years ago I dreamed of giving a lecture to Italian medical students about mental health in the university setting. Most of my research so far was really about them, and discussing with them about this topic is amazing. And here I am! Almost getting used to it, always excited like it is the first time.

A big thank goes to Angelo Maria Pezzullo for the invitation, and to Natalie Terzikhan, Arfan Ikram, and Stefania Boccia for the opportunity to be in Rome within the frame of the Exact project!

DINNER AND DIATRIBES

Oggi durante l’annuale giornata di dipartimento ho parlato con un medico in pensione che per anni si è occupato di controllo delle malattie infettive. Uno che ha girato il mondo intero, e che definisce il pensionamento una “discriminazione”. Perché lui vuole continuare a lavorare, perché ama il suo lavoro. E per questo gira ancora tra di noi. Una persona con tanta voglia di parlare.
Discutevamo dei massimi sistemi, da femminismo a politica, passando per cultura olandese, e per quella italiana di cui è un grande fan e critico. Ad un certo punto è venuto fuori, necessariamente, l’argomento educazione. Ci siamo confrontati e abbiamo condiviso idee ed esperienze.
Gli ho detto che in Italia siamo soliti studiare letteratura e filosofia dalle critiche dei grandi maestri. In Italia nutriamo questo rispetto pazzesco per i grandi, specie se son già morti. Tendiamo a valorizzare i morti più dei vivi. Rendiamo onore postumo, noi italiani. Le idee dei Grandi, specie se morti, sono la Bibbia. Tendiamo a “costruire tombe per i morti più grandi delle case dei vivi”. Siamo formati a leggere e ripetere quanto pensato da altri, perché erano i migliori e i loro pensieri erano i migliori possibili. Noi non siamo altrettanto bravi. Non possiamo esserlo.
E non siamo neanche altrettanto bravi, mediamente, ad elaborare il nostro, di pensiero. Infatti é politicamente evidente che buona parte della popolazione legge e ripete in maniera acritica quanto letto in una fonte considerata per qualsivoglia motivo attendibile, che sia un libro di testo o un post su facebook.
Lui mi ha risposto che è quel che succede nei Paesi tradizionalisti. L’Olanda é spaccata in due da questo punto di vista. La metà nord dell’Olanda é dal tempo della riforma protestante che non accetta in maniera acritica quanto imposto dall’alto, dai Grandi. Quella volta, ad esempio, smisero di accettare in maniera acritica quanto dettato dal Papa. Non sono uno storico né un teologico, e sono sicuro che le cose sono molto più complicate di così. Tuttavia ho trovato molto interessante l’associazione.
Mi ha inoltre detto che in Olanda esiste un detto che tradotto in italiano suonerebbe qualcosa come “fai qualcosa di livello normale, che basta”. Non c’è bisogno che tu dica grandi cose. Specie se quelle cose non sono farina del tuo sacco.
Mi ha detto un’altra cosa. Lui ha studiato alla Johns Hopkins, che è una tra le migliori scuole di sanità pubblica al mondo. Mi ha detto che uno dei motivi per i quali quella scuola eccelle si cela negli studenti che scelgono.
“Li cercano studentesse e studenti che con le loro idee e capacità contribuiscano alla loro grandezza e alla crescita costante della scuola.”
Non solo il contrario.
“Ed è la stessa filosofia che proviamo ad avere qui”.

Last week I started my period as Visiting Researcher at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore. I will be working here on behalf of the Department of Epidemiology of the Erasmus MC for the next five months.

The first day was just great. I met a group of colleagues on their first week of public health residency and gave a small lecture on introduction to research. It was wonderful to see how curious and critical they are.
