Impact of peritoneal fluid culture findings on postoperative outcomes in pediatric patients with complicated appendicitis

Impact of peritoneal fluid culture findings on postoperative outcomes in pediatric patients with complicated appendicitis
https://doi.org/10.1007/s00383-026-06624-y
Although peritoneal fluid cultures are routinely obtained in pediatric patients with complicated appendicitis, the influence of individual bacterial species on postoperative clinical outcomes has not been fully clarified.
In this study, we investigated the relationship between bacterial species identified in peritoneal fluid cultures and postoperative length of hospital stay. The results demonstrated that the presence of specific bacterial species was significantly associated with postoperative hospitalization duration.
These findings suggest that microbiological characteristics, including the types of bacteria present, may influence postoperative outcomes in addition to antimicrobial susceptibility patterns.
We hope to continue accumulating cases and further investigating this important clinical question.

🎉 Congratulations, Dr. Kudo! 🎉
Purpose Intraoperative peritoneal cultures for pediatric complicated appendicitis (CA) are important for informing postoperative antibiotic strategies. However, the specific impact of individual bacterial species remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the association between peritonea...
