NAIST Career Services Office - 奈良先端大キャリア支援室 has started offering a variety of career-related programs for our new international graduate students at Nara Institute of Science and Technology.

Recently, we held sessions on:
• “Thinking About Career Design”
• “Understanding the Japanese Job Hunting Timeline”

At the very beginning of graduate school, we believe it is important not only to think about job hunting, but also to step back and reflect on:

Why did I choose this path?
What kind of professional do I want to become?
How do I want to connect my research with society?

By connecting practical career knowledge with deeper self-reflection, we hope to support students in designing their own career paths with a broader perspective.

Career development is not only about finding a job, it is also about understanding how our experiences shape our future and identity.

✨The 2026 Career Guidance Program Is Officially Kicking Off!✨

This Monday, we held a Career Support Orientation for graduate international students at NAIST.
The session focused on key aspects of job hunting in Japan for those who are just beginning their career journey.

We discussed:
✔ The unique job hunting schedule in Japan and why starting early matters
✔ The reality of Japanese language expectations in the hiring process
✔ How to connect your research with your career path
These are practical and highly relevant topics that many students are eager to understand.

At the same time, I emphasized a broader perspective:
How should we position “job hunting” within the larger context of building a career as a researcher?

Rather than focusing only on immediate job search strategies, it’s important to reflect on how your research and expertise connect to society and what kind of value you can create through them.

I believe this perspective is essential for building a sustainable and meaningful long-term career.

NAIST Career Services Office - 奈良先端大キャリア支援室 will continue to support each student’s career development through one-on-one advising, seminars, and opportunities to connect with industry.

🎓 Career Orientation for New Master’s & PhD Students

NAIST Career Services Office - 奈良先端大キャリア支援室 is excited to announce a career orientation session designed especially for newly enrolled graduate students!
Led by experienced career advisors who have supported international students for many years, this session will focus on key aspects of job hunting in Japan that are often difficult to understand from an international perspective.

If you are seriously considering working in Japan as one of your career options, we highly encourage you to join.

🔍 What we will cover:
●Many students plan to start job hunting right before or after graduation
→ In Japan, recruitment follows a structured timeline, and timing is critical
●You may expect English-based hiring, especially in global companies
→ In reality, even in foreign-affiliated companies, business-level Japanese is often required
●You may think skills and achievements are the main evaluation criteria
→ Japanese companies also place strong emphasis on cultural fit, teamwork, and communication

For international students, job hunting in Japan can be particularly challenging due to:

A fixed recruitment schedule
The gap between language of study and language of work

🌱 Let’s start early and navigate this journey together.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Event Report: HR Seminar at NAIST Career Services Office - 奈良先端大キャリア支援室 -
What Interviewers Really Look For

Last Friday, we had the pleasure of inviting an HR professional Andrey Pak Tsuruta, currently working at Applied Intuition to NAIST to give a seminar on what interviewers actually look for during the hiring process.

To make the session accessible to all students, we organized separate seminars in Japanese and English.

During the English session, the speaker generously shared insights not only from an HR perspective but also from their own experience as a former international student navigating career opportunities.

Students had the opportunity to learn about how companies evaluate candidates, common mistakes applicants make, and how to better prepare for interviews.

The seminar also received very positive feedback from students. Many participants said that the speaker’s real HR experiences were particularly valuable, and that the interactive format where students could share their own ideas through case studies made the session engaging and practical.

We are grateful to Andrey Pak Tsuruta for sharing such practical and honest insights with our students.

NAIST Career Services will continue to create opportunities for students to connect with professionals and gain a deeper understanding of career paths in Japan.

Event Report: Designing Your Job-Hunting Roadmap – From Understanding to Action

Last week, we held the third session of our job-hunting seminar series, “Kickstart Your Career in Japan.”
This session focused on a hands-on workshop to create a career roadmap.
We are happy to share that all participants reported high satisfaction with the session.

The theme was simple but powerful:
✨ Creating a roadmap that truly works.
Instead of making just another to-do list, we aimed to design a practical plan that leads to real action.
Before building an action plan, we focused on three important steps:

🧭 Step 1: Understand Your Current Position
Where are you now?
Participants reflected on their skills, experiences, values, and environment to gain an objective understanding of their starting point.

🚧 Step 2: Identify What Is Holding You Back
Anxiety, assumptions, lack of information…
By recognizing the “brakes” that prevent action, students can begin to find realistic solutions.

⏳ Step 3: Design with a Time-Frame Perspective
Using short-term, mid-term, and long-term perspectives, participants built action plans that are both realistic and flexible.
In this third session, we also made a strong connection to Session 1, where students explored industry and career information.

Our goal was not just to provide knowledge, but to help participants integrate that knowledge into their own personal roadmap.

Many commented that they were able to clearly see their concrete next steps.

We will continue supporting students in turning understanding into action as they design their careers in Japan!
