Traveling between A*o and Takachiho without a car just got much easier! The "A*ochiho-go" bus route is updating its path and schedule to better connect major tourist destinations.

Many fireflies can be seen along the Shiohitashi River on the west side of the park.

【薬草パーク＠熊本大学薬学部】
【Medicinal Plant Park @ Kumamoto University School of Pharmacy】

熊本市中心部から徒歩20分、交通の便も良い大江キャンパスにある「薬草パーク」は、常時一般開放されています。

Located at the Oe Campus—just a 20-minute walk from central Kumamoto—the Medicinal Plant Park (Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences) is a hidden gem open to the public year-round.

元々、肥後細川藩の薬園の流れを汲んでいる由緒ある薬用植物園です。
今回挙げた写真は5月5日撮影されたものですが、5月16日（土）には、観察会も開催されます（予約不要 参加費¥500) 。初夏の1日、散策に出掛けてみませんか？

This is no ordinary garden. It is a site of great heritage, tracing its roots back to the historic medicinal herb gardens of the Higo Hosokawa clan. Walking through, you can truly feel the legacy of Kumamoto’s traditional botanical culture.

Yukio Hideshima Retrospective: Dark Fantasy/Mysterious
The Unique Artist from Minamata (through June 21, 2026)

戦後日本版画の重要作家のひとり、熊本県水俣市出身の画家・版画家の秀島由己男(1934-2018)の、四半世紀ぶりの大回顧展。
Discover the profound and unique world of Yukio Hideshima (1934–2018), a leading figure in post-war Japanese printmaking and a native of Minamata, Kumamoto. This major retrospective—the first in a quarter-century—offers a deep dive into the life and soul of a truly singular artist.

貧しい家庭に生まれ、若くして両親を亡くし、中学卒業後は就職。ほぼ独学で絵画制作の技術を習得した秀島。作家の石牟礼道子の著作の挿絵などを多く手掛け、西洋古典絵画の高い技術に憧れ、亡くなる直前まで技術向上に熱心で、唯一無二であることを指針としていた。
Born into poverty and orphaned at a young age, Hideshima began working immediately after graduating from middle school. Despite having no formal art education, he taught himself the intricate techniques of painting and printmaking.
Driven by a deep admiration for the mastery of Western classical art, he remained a devoted student of his craft until his final days. His guiding principle was always to be "one-of-a-kind."

Hideshima is also well-known for his powerful illustrations for the works of the acclaimed author Michiko Ishimure. His art doesn't just decorate the page; it resonates with the deep themes of life and nature found in her writing.

秀島は、2018年に急逝。代表作・新発見の資料・未発表作品・美術コレクションを含む260点を超える出品点数で振り返る。
Following his sudden passing in 2018, this exhibition brings together over 260 items, including:
* His most iconic masterpieces
* Recently discovered archival materials
* Never-before-seen unpublished works
* Pieces from his personal art collection

水俣病公式確認70年という節目でもあり、秀島の世界観を構成する一要素としての出身地・水俣についても考える機会にもなっている。
As we mark the 70th anniversary of the official recognition of Minamata disease, this exhibition also serves as an opportunity to reflect on Minamata—the birthplace that fundamentally shaped Hideshima’s worldview.
