【小田滋賞 The Oda Shigeru Award】
*Papers in English welcomed.

国際法学会は毎年、国際法、国際私法、国際政治・外交史に関する学生の論文を顕彰しています。

学部生、ロースクール生、修士の院生なら誰でも応募でき、受賞者には10万〜30万円の副賞が贈られます。

提出予定や提出済みの学位論文でもよく、日本語または英語の論文が対象となります

ポイントは2つ
1. 名誉ある賞
国際法の専門家に小田滋賞を知らない人はいないというほどこの賞は広く知られており、国際司法裁判所元判事の名前を冠するだけ権威ある賞です。受賞者は毎年9月に行われる国際法学会の研究大会において表彰され、皆からたたえられます。
大変名誉ある賞なので、受賞すれば一生の宝になるでしょう。

2. 対象のテーマの範囲が広い
国際(公)法、国際私法、国際政治・外交史に関する論文であれば何でも良いです。自分に関係がないと思ったあなたの論文も応募できるかもしれません！

提出期限は2024年2月29日！

The Japanese Society of International Law (JSIL) every year gives awards to students’ papers on public or private international law and international politics and diplomacy.

It’s open to undergraduate and master students and those pursuing Juris Doctor at an institution in Japan. The award winners will receive 100,000 to 300,000 yen.

You may submit your graduation or master thesis if it’s written either in English or Japanese.

Why you should apply for it
1. An honourable award.
Everyone studying international law knows the award. It has great authority as represented by the name of a former judge of the International Court of Justice. An award granting ceremony will be held in the occasion of the JSIL conference.
If awarded, it will surely be a great treasure in your whole life.

2. A wide range of topics
Any paper concerning p***c or private international law or international politics and diplomacy is welcomed.

The deadline of the submission is the 29th of February 2024.

2024年宇宙法模擬裁判大会
2024 Space Law Moot Court Competition

みなさんは宇宙が好きですか？
宇宙という神秘の世界に憧れを持つ人は多いのではないでしょうか。

実は、国際法は宇宙空間をも規律しています。
宇宙法と呼ばれる一群の国際法です。
例えば、月をどのように利用すべきか、人工衛星が衝突・墜落したら誰が責任をとるのか、そういう事柄を規律しています。

テクノロジーの発展が著しい今日、宇宙活動は大変盛んです。また、それゆえ様々な問題（宇宙空間の軍事化、スペースデブリ等）も生じています。
そのような問題にいかなる法的解答を与えるか、それが国際法の課題です。
宇宙法模擬裁判はこれを学び、考える絶好の機会です。

＜大会概要＞
国際宇宙法学会（International Institute of Space Law: IISL)は、毎年、宇宙法模擬裁判大会を開催しています。
世界各国から80－100校の大学が参加する世界規模の模擬裁判大会です。アフリカ、アジア太平洋、北アメリカ、ラテンアメリカ、ヨーロッパの5地域で予選が行われ、勝者たちは本選に進出して世界一を競います。
日本の大学はアジア太平洋ラウンドに参加します。

宇宙法模擬裁判は架空の国家間紛争を扱う国際裁判です。オランダ・ハーグにある国際司法裁判所（ICJ）をモデルに、原告国・被告国に分かれて宇宙活動に関する法的紛争について議論を交わします。

1チームは2人もしくは3人で構成され、1大学から1チームが出場します。学部生・大学院生ともに参加可能です。
使用言語は英語です。

Do you like the space?
Perhaps many of you have once at least been fascinated by the mysterious world.

International Law governs the outer space actually.
A set of rules called "Space Law" is part of international law regulating space activities, such as the use of the Moon and the liability issues arising from a collision of articifical satellites to name a few.

Today, technology cannot stop developing and there have been more and more space activities.
This gives rise to a lot of issues, too, militarization of the outer space and generation of space debris, for example.
International Law is tasked to give legal answers to these issues, and now it's time to learn space law and consider possible solutions!


It is an international mock trial competition in which 80 to 100 law schools around the world participate every year.
It has been organized and held by the International Institute of Space Law (IISL) since 1992.
Participants compete in regional rounds (Africa, Asia-Pacific, North America, Latin America, Europe), and the winners may advance to the world final. Universities in Japan participate in the Asia-Pacific round.

The Space Law Moot Court Competition addresses a fictional (futuristic) case between two states before a mock court dealing with inter-state disputes, the model being the International Court of Justice (ICJ) or aka. the World Court at the Hague.
Participants present written and oral arguments on legal questions concerning space activities, playing roles as Applicant and Respondent.

A team consists of 2 or 3 persons.
Only one team per university may join the competition.
Both undergraduate and postgraduate students are eligible.
English is the official language of the competition.
The schedule is shown below.

【講義案内 Courses on International Law】
11月1日より冬学期が始まります。

冬学期には「International Law」（法学部、2単位）という国際法科目が開講されます。例年、国際法の入門講義は夏学期に行われるので、いま国際法を学びたい人にとってはこれがチャンスです。

本科目の特徴は、英語で開講されること、そして学生のプレゼンやディスカッションを中心とする双方向授業であることです。

英語開講のため、毎年、他学部からも含めて多くの留学生が受講します。日本人学生にとっては、英語力の向上および留学生との交流が期待できるでしょう。
実は、国際法はそれ自体がある種の国際言語です。英語で国際法を学び、英語で法的議論を交わす能力を身につけることは、国際コミュニケーションにとって大変重要といえます。

双方向型の授業はこうしたコミュニケーションを促進します。単調になりがちな一方向型の講義に比べて刺激的かつ学習効果も高いでしょう。

最後に、本科目で教科書に指定されているEmmanuelle Tourme-Jouannet, A Short Introduction to Interational Law (CUP, 2014)は、全100ページほどの手に取りやすい本ですが、しかし体系書を単純に薄めたようなものではなく、変化を続ける国際法を正しく理解するために、その歴史的・社会的な要因を考慮しながら、ダイナミックに解説したものといえます。大学図書館経由でオンラインで読めます。

The Winter term is going to start on 1 Novermber.

During this term a course on international law entitled "International Law" (Faculty of Law, 2 credits) will be given. You can start learning international law now!

This course is taught in English and characterized by interactions through presentations and discussions.

As it's an English course, every year many international students including those from other faculties take this course. Of course there are some Japanese students. Thus, it's going to be a great forum of discussion and communication with different, multicultural perspectives.
Indeed, intenational law as such is a kind of international language through which you can achieve a common understanding with other different people.

The interactive course method would be helpful for such a communication. It's going to enable you to learn international law more effectively and get more interested in the subject than a unidirectional (boring in many cases) lecture.

Finally, the designated course text, Emmanuelle Tourme-Jouannet, A Short Introduction to Interational Law (CUP, 2014), is handy as it has only 100 pages, but it's not merely a concise version of an international law book. It's rather a dynamic presentation of some crucial points that characterize the changing international law with underlying historical and sociological factors taken into account. You have online access to the book via the university library.

【国際人道法模擬裁判 IHL Moot Court】
赤十字国際員会（ICRC）駐日事務所は毎年12月頃に、国際人道法模擬裁判大会を開催しています。

本大会は、オランダ・ハーグにある国際刑事裁判所（ICC）をモデルに、架空の武力紛争において行われたとされる戦争犯罪の有無をめぐって、各チームが検察官と弁護人の立場に立って議論を交わします。すべて英語で行われます。

教室で国際法を学ぶだけでなく、より実践的に「国際法を使う」体験ができ、大変おすすめです。
生きた国際法に理解を深めるとともに、英語力の向上も期待できます。

過去に一橋大学も出場した経験があります。
本年度は出場しませんが、国際法研究会は模擬裁判への参加を積極的に広めています。学部生・院生ともに参加できます。
興味をお持ちの方は何でもおたずねください！

International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Delegation in Japan, holds the International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Moot Court Competition in December every year.

It is a legal exercise where each team, playing a role as Prosecutor or Defendant of the International Criminal Court (ICC) situated in the Hague, presents written and oral arguments over war crimes allegedly committed in the context of a fictional armed conflict situation. The whole competition is done in English.

We strongly hope that you participate in the competition as it will offer you a great opportunity to "practice law" instead of just learning it in classrooms, thus allowing you to get profound knowledge of international law as it works in the real world.
It's also good that the competition is open to English speakers.

Hitotsubashi University has participated in the competition before, but not this year.
We promote participation from our university, whether you are at undergraduate or postgraduate degree.
We support your moot court activities, too.
