◤ Kyoto University Lectureship Award ◢

Established in 2025 to foster global research networks and advance academic scholarship, the Kyoto University Lectureship Award is a new international award that recognizes outstanding and innovative researchers shaping the future of science.

As part of the award, the laureate is invited to Kyoto University to deliver a special lecture and engage in academic exchange, creating new inspiration and connections for the next generation of researchers.

The inaugural award in the field of Life Sciences or Medicine is presented to Dr. Clifford P. Brangwynne, internationally recognized for his pioneering work on liquid–liquid phase separation (LLPS) in living cells, which has advanced our understanding of cell biology.

◤新たな国際学術賞「京都大学レクチャーシップアワード」◢

京都大学は、2025年に新たな国際学術賞「京都大学レクチャーシップアワード」を創設しました。
本アワードは、次代の科学技術を切り拓く新進気鋭の卓越した研究者を顕彰し、国際的な研究ネットワークの形成と学術の発展を推進することを目的としています。

受賞者を京都に招へいし、特別レクチャーや研究交流を通じて、次世代研究者に触発の機会を提供する点も大きな特色です。第一線で活躍する研究者と若手研究者が出会い、知と視座を共有することで、新たな研究の芽を育むことを目指しています。

そして、記念すべき第1回「医学・生命科学」分野では、Clifford P. Brangwynne博士が受賞者に選ばれました。博士は、「液‐液相分離(Liquid‒Liquid Phase Separation: LLPS)」が細胞内の空間的組織化の基本原理であることを示し、細胞生物学にパラダイムシフトをもたらした研究で国際的に高く評価されています。

◤ Kyoto University Lectureship Award ◢

— Research Highlight —

The interior of a cell has long been thought to be organized by membranes—until Dr. Clifford P. Brangwynne showed otherwise.

Liquid–liquid phase separation (LLPS) is a physical phenomenon in which molecules, once exceeding a certain concentration, spontaneously condense from the surrounding solution to form liquid-like droplets.

Dr. Brangwynne was the first to demonstrate that LLPS occurs inside living cells, establishing a new fundamental principle: cellular compartments can be organized without membranes.

This discovery is considered a mechanism underlying a wide range of biological processes, including intracellular signaling and DNA organization. When LLPS is not properly regulated, these normally reversible droplets can transition into irreversible protein aggregates—an effect that has been suggested to be involved in neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, ALS, and Alzheimer’s disease.

◤ 研究紹介— #京都大学レクチャーシップアワード ◢

細胞の中は膜で区切られている——その前提を覆したのが、Clifford P. Brangwynne博士です🔬

液-液相分離（LLPS）は、分子の濃度が一定を超えると、周囲の溶液から自発的に集まり、液体のような濃縮された液滴を形成する物理現象です。

Brangwynne博士は、液-液相分離（LLPS）が生きた細胞内でも起きていることを初めて実証し、“細胞内の区画が膜によらずしても区切られる”という新しい基本原理を確立しました。

この発見は、細胞内シグナル伝達やDNAの格納など、さまざまな生命現象に関わる普遍的な仕組みと考えられています。さらに、液-液相分離（LLPS）が適切に解除されない場合、可逆的な液滴構造が不可逆的なタンパク質凝集へと移行し、パーキンソン病やALS、アルツハイマー病などの神経変性疾患の病態に関与する可能性も示唆されています。
