☀️ Let’s learn together how to prevent and respond to heat illness!

Last year, some areas in Japan reached temperatures as high as 40°C. In April, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) introduced a new word - 酷暑日 (kokushobi) - to describe extremely hot 40°C days. The word combines 酷 (harsh), 暑 (hot), and 日 (day). This may mean that Japan could continue to experience record-breaking heat in 2026. 🥵

Let’s learn how to stay safe and protect ourselves from extreme summer heat in Japan through the information in the images below. ⬇️

🚅 Shinkansen In Golden Week

Golden Week (GW) is coming! Are you excited about taking time off and giving yourself a well-deserved break? In 2026, GW falls between April 29 and May 6, which includes Showa Day (April 29), Constitution Memorial Day (May 3), Greenery Day (May 4), and Children's Day (May 5). As Constitution Memorial Day falls on a Sunday, we get an extra day off this year! 🥳

Japanese people often use this long holiday to travel far or simply recharge with relaxing activities. Because a huge number of people will be commuting in Japan for the holidays, all Nozomi Shinkansen require guests to reserve seats before boarding during this period. Be sure to book your tickets in advance to secure your seat and plan your trip smoothly. Also, don’t forget to obtain discount certificates from the issuing machine, as Okayama University students can get 20% off all train journeys over 100 km one-way, including Shinkansen tickets. Let’s explore new places at reasonable prices while still being university students!

Enjoy your holidays ahead, OUers!

📚 Course Registration Strategy for First-Year Students

----------------------------------------------

🌱 Starting university in Japan can feel exciting but also a bit overwhelming, when it comes to your first important task: course registration. Here are some strategies for building your schedule:

- Check required courses: these are mandatory for graduation, so they should be your top priority when building your timetable.

- Avoid wasted gaps between class: try not to leave long breaks between classes. Clustering classes helps you save time for studying, part-time work, or extracurricular activities.

- Manage your credit load: most universities allow around 20-24 credits max per semester. For first-year students, a balanced range is usually 16-20 credits to avoid overload and maintain good grades (which may affect scholarships eligibility).

- Check the syllabus: pay attention to how grades are evaluated. Exams require strong test skills, while reports suit students who prefer independent work.

- Ask seniors (先輩/senpai): seniors can share their insights about interesting classes, as well as the hard class for new students to consider.

Let’s Lighten Your Bag 🎒

It has been a week since the new academic year started, and you might be adding some new books to your learning path. Besides books, a laptop is essential for in-class study as a university student. Taking care of both can make your backpack very heavy. To lighten your bag, you can switch to digital books instead of carrying physical ones. 📚

🏫 With an Okayama University ID, students can access a variety of books online from the library website and read academic papers for free! For those who still prefer physical books and the feel of paper, you can visit the library and borrow books for short-term use in class without carrying too many back home.
