Global Health Leadership Program/Global Leadership Program, The University of To Official Facebook group of the Global Health Leadership Program at the University of Tokyo Global Health is an international priority.

As our world grows, health challenges get more complicated. Many new organizations have emerged in the past decade. Although they share a common goal toward a healthier world, they unfortunately lack genuine coordination. Global Health Leadership Program (GHLP) is an initiative that nurtures bright, young and motivated leaders to orchestrate the world's fight for better health in future.

In 2000, the University of Oxford introduced its most significant reforms for more than half a century. The University was divided into five (later four) independent divisions to which all financial and academic responsibility was devolved. An ‘as earned’ principle was introduced which meant that Divisions and Departments received funds on the basis on which money came to the university and then ‘bought’ services either from the University or on the open market. The introduction of this internal form of market competition was designed to enable the University to continue to complete externally on the global stage. After almost fifteen years of this model being in place, it is clear that it has had many positive benefits. But it also suffers from several major drawbacks which the university is now needing to address with some urgency.

"Old and New Challenges in Global Health" on 30 October 2014

In keeping with the theme of the Seminar, "The New Generation of Burden of Disease", during the Seminar, you will learn from the distinguished guest speaker, Professor Peter Piot, Director of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, and the founding Executive Director of UNAIDS and Under Secretary-General of the United Nations (1995-2008), how would we be able to confront with “new, and perhaps more complex,” health challenges. He will share his view of “multi-disciplinary approaches” and “forward-looking leadership” which are essential in fighting against communicable diseases, along with legal, political, economic, technological and societal impacts through innovation.

The venue will be the FUKUTAKE Learning Theater, and the Seminar is co-organized by Global Leadership Program (GLP) and Enhancing Development of Global Entrepreneur Program (EDGE). Global Health Innovative Technology Fund (GHIT Fund) will also support the event. We are hoping that you will share our enthusiasm for your active participation.

Your presence and participation is invaluable to us and a critical component of the success of the Seminar. We look forward to seeing you in October at the Hongo campus, The University of Tokyo, Japan.

【Internship Activity】

One of my major tasks in World Health Organization (WHO) is to conduct a survey among partners from all over the world who have signed a “Call to Action” for BRaVe (Battle against Respiratory Viruses) Initiative (http://www.who.int/influenza/patient_care/clinical/brave/en/), which is a major WHO initiative to control respiratory viral diseases in the world. Now, I am preparing questionnaires for the survey and learning to use WHO intranet survey system. This process involves identification of indicators. Finding good indicators is the key for a meaningful evaluation of a project. After conducting the survey and analysing data, my job will be to prepare a progress review of BRaVe Initiative for WHO.

As Ebola has hit the West Africa and WHO is trying to do its best to contain the disease spread, I have an opportunity to learn how WHO is dealing with such an epidemic disease of global concern. I have opportunities to participate in Ebola response technical and operational meetings, observe and learn WHO’s leadership in coordinating other international organizations such as UNICEF, Red Cross, CDC, MSF and local governments to stop the spread of the disease. Besides, in my clinical team I have opportunity to observe how team leader sets priorities, communicates with other members and motivates the team to take action.

At this moment, as an intern in the department of Pandemic and Epidemic Diseases (PED) at WHO, I have got an opportunity to assist my team to evaluate its BRaVe initiative for fighting against respiratory viral infections which are unrecognized killers of children as well as huge economic burden in the industrialized countries, and help to contain an unprecedented outbreak of Ebola in West Africa.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Global Leadership Program (GLP) at the University of Tokyo and World Health Organization (WHO) for giving me this opportunity to have hands-on experience at WHO. Thank you very much.

Bhim Gopal Dhoubhadel (GLP 2014)
