We are investigating auto-methanation—a process that converts CO2 into methane without external heating—for the on-site utilization of oxygen-containing industrial exhaust gas.
In this study, we combined spiral-structured catalysts with an adiabatic two-stage reactor. Heat generated by the reaction between hydrogen and oxygen drives methanation, while thermal insulation helps retain the reaction heat. We evaluated the system’s performance under high gas-flow conditions.
We also assessed exergy efficiency, accounting for CO2 emissions associated with external heating, to examine both reaction performance and energy utilization.
The animation illustrates gas flow and methane formation in the two-stage catalyst reactor system.
