Swimming season is starting for many schools in the US and Canada! I was a competitive swimmer from age 8 to 21, specializing in butterfly. I want to share what I’ve learned over the years, especially from my time with the Deaf swim team at Gallaudet University and the Deaf National Teams for the Deaflympics (the Olympics for Deaf athletes) and World Championships! We always appreciate fans coming to our swim meets. They really help boost our morale and spirit. But it can be challenging for us Deafies who can’t hear the fans’ cheers. So, here’s a handy guide on how to cheer on Deaf swimmers!

Please don’t actually do the drone thing! xD For backstroke, we just try our best with cheering from the turn wall. Sometimes we swimmers can briefly see a little as we turn. But we know you’re all with us in spirit!

I want to emphasize: this comic is a personal statement on how I identify and how I feel. Maybe some folks relate to it, and some don’t. No problem. Having a gender is cool. It’s just not for me.

For me, being placed in a specific gender feels like I’m being boxed in, constantly. Cisgender folks and trans folks who identify with a specific gender usually don’t feel boxed in.

I was assigned female at birth (AFAB) and was frustrated about being boxed into the expectations of being a woman. As a kid, I was a tomboy, and I loved it. That changed when I became a teenager and then a young woman. Society’s pressure on girls and women is intense.

Then I transitioned to being a man. I did feel free from the expectations placed on women. BUT, I found that I was boxed in again! I had to be a manly man to pass. I got a taste of the pressures that men go through. And I saw how some aspects of masculinity are really harmful to all.

Then I learned more about nonbinary. A light bulb went on. I transitioned to nonbinary. I jumped out of the boxes.
And I love it.

I love being outside the boxes. I love floating across and enjoying the best of both worlds, and outer space.

P.S: If you identify with a gender, please know that you should still be allowed to express yourself however you want. Wear any clothes you like, act how you want, etc. We are humans. Just be good to each other. ;)

I feel the message is important enough that I should share it in International Sign. It is a translanguaging practice / pidgin that we use internationally, and it’s different from ASL (American Sign Language)! Very cool. I’m a bit rusty since it’s been awhile! I learned & practiced it at the Deaflympics (Olympics for Deaf athletes), the WFD (World Federation of the Deaf) congress, and the WFDYS (WFD Youth Section) camp, and other international events including Clin d’Oeil, the Tokyo International Deaf Arts Festival, and my travels!

So let’s work together to make the WFD’s, and our community’s, 2026 IWDP theme a reality!

I decided to create a comic based on the World Federation of the Deaf’s (WFD) 2026 International Week of the Deaf People (IWDP) theme: Declaring Deaf People’s Human Rights. And I’m posting it a day early because today is the International Day of Sign Languages!

This was a bit vulnerable for me to make. I often don’t want to say or create something that ends up with hearing able bodied people pitying us. Too often, when we share our frustrations, we’re met with nothing but pity—not action from society to actually address the issue. Too often, they walk away thinking, “Phew, I’m glad I’m not Deaf.” Or, they take over and make decisions for us, thinking it’s best that we try to become as hearing as possible to “integrate into the society.”

But I want society to face our frustration and actually listen to us. I want them to work with us, together, to create change. Not just for us Deaf people, but for everyone involved. So I made this as a call to action.

Yes, it can be challenging to be Deaf sometimes. And yes, many of us, including myself, love being Deaf. I wouldn’t have had the life and incredible opportunities I have if I weren’t Deaf. We can hold both truths. And honestly, most of the time, it doesn’t have to be challenging or frustrating if society simply listens to us and works with us to make the world a barrier-free place.

So let’s work together to make the WFD’s—and our community’s—2026 IWDP theme a reality! Not sure how? Just read my previous comic! Follow and listen to the many amazing Deaf people we’re fortunate to have on our planet.

2026 International Week of the Deaf People (IWDP) will be on 20 - 26 September! What will you do for the IWD?

Fun fact- the flag in the last panel is the “Deaf Flag” / “Sign Union Flag.” It was created by a DeafBlind artist Arnaud Balard. It’s a hand with five fingers that not only represents sign languages but also the five continents. I had to draw it in full colour not sepia so we can appreciate it!

We’re lucky to live in a time period where it’s much easier than ever to find information, resources, and events that are by Deaf folks. I do hope more of IWDP will reach out to the broader community. Having been involved in IWDP for several years, sometimes it’s challenging for us to invest so much of our community resources only for the hearing community to not interact as much as we hoped. So, hearies, go share our resources and come to our events!

I redid and upgraded this comic, one of the few I made for Buff n Blue, Gallaudet University’s newspaper, when I was maybe 20 years old. 😆 That was pretty much the style of comics I did starting in high school. I mostly kept comics to myself, maybe sharing with a few family and friends. Then in 2012, I got a fancy upgrade to my comic making- an ipad with a drawing app! Carodoodles was born, and the rest is history!

BTW! I’ll be nothing at the Ontario Cultural Society of the Deaf (OCSD)’s arts & culture festival in Belleville, Ontario on September 18th. More info at Ontario Cultural Society of the Deaf

Here’s a little different perspective for you all! We Deafies usually do not view our hearing loss as something ‘broken’. I still remember reading a fictional story in which a hearing author had their Deaf character cut the ears off dolls’ to make them “Deaf like me.” I remember thinking to myself, “Why?? I still do need my ears for other things!” Ha.

This legit happened to me. Made me feel my age, literally, and gave me all the feels, fr IYKYK. 😅 At least we got our “A/S/L”, WASSUP, POS or PWOMS, etc

(Millenial to normal language translation:
It made me feel old and that made me feel emotions for real / literally. IYKYK = If you know, you know. A/S/L = Age, S*x, and Location. WASSUP = what’s up. POS = Parents over shoulder / PWOMS = Parents watching over my shoulder.)

This happens all the time. It’s ok, people are learning. But I hope more will learn so we Deafies don’t need to explain it again and again and again and again… (especially since time with doctors is already limited! 🙃)

You can help by encouraging people to quickly research how to work with sign language interpreters and us Deaf people before appointments with us. There are tons of awesome resources out there. After all, knowledge is power! 😄

This idea came to me when I searched online for “sign” but accidentally left out “language,” and got results for signs—boards, posters, signage, etc. 😜

That receptionist is technically not wrong... but very wrong! 😆
