International Goalkeeper Day is celebrated every year on April 14 to recognize and appreciate the crucial role goalkeepers play in football (soccer). While strikers often get the glory, goalkeepers are the last line of defense—the difference between victory and defeat.

The date honors the birthday of Miguel Calero, a legendary Colombian goalkeeper known for his incredible reflexes, leadership, and long career. He is remembered as one of the finest goalkeepers in football history.

Did you know that traditional and prehistoric ball games have been played for millennia, including by ancient Chinese, Greek and Romans, Native Americans, and Turkic people? However, the modern codes of football we know today date back to its codification at English public schools during the 19th century.
The sport grew in influence as the British Empire expanded through colonization.
The Football League was founded in 1888 in England as the first of many professional football associations.
