In commemoration of World Environment Day, Taita Taveta University, in collaboration with Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), Kenya Wildlife Research and Training Institute (KWRTI), and the Kenya National Innovation Agency (KeNIA), conducted a tree-growing activity within Tsavo East National Park.

The initiative marks the commencement of the ambitious 10-Year Tsavo Corridor Greening Project, a conservation undertaking that Taita Taveta University will spearhead in partnership with key environmental and wildlife conservation stakeholders. The project aims to restore degraded landscapes, enhance biodiversity, and contribute to climate change mitigation efforts within the Tsavo ecosystem.

The event was graced by Prof. Christine Onyango, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic, Research and Outreach), who reaffirmed the University's commitment to environmental sustainability, research-driven conservation, and community engagement. She emphasized the importance of collaborative action in safeguarding natural ecosystems for future generations.

The tree-growing exercise underscores the partners' shared vision of promoting ecological restoration and building resilient landscapes through innovative and sustainable conservation interventions.

Today, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Fred Simiyu Barasa, hosted a delegation from the Kenya National Shipping Line Ltd. led by LT Gen (Rtd) Levi Franklin Mghalu, Board Chairman, and Mr. Abdallah Hatim, Managing Director.

The team deliberated on key areas of partnership, including the promotion of student attachments, internships, and job opportunities—particularly for students pursuing a Bachelor of Maritime and Shipping Management.

“Taita Taveta University offers a unique opportunity for students undertaking a Bachelor of Maritime and Shipping Management, as it is the only university in Kenya that has placed strong emphasis on industry needs,” said Mr. Abdallah Hatim, Managing Director of KNSL.

The two parties agreed to develop a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a structured framework for collaboration and mutual benefit.

This collaboration is expected to significantly enhance students’ practical skills and employability by providing real-world exposure and hands-on industry experience. It also underscores the University’s commitment to aligning academic programmes with industry demands, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared to contribute effectively to the maritime and shipping sector both locally and internationally.
