This study examines the Korean Wave (Hallyu) as a phenomenon from the perspectives of “cultural dissemination” and “industrial exchange,” based on the German documentary film Kultur-King Korea. The documentary, subtitled Wie südkoreanische Popkultur die Welt erobert (How South Korean Pop Culture Conquered the World), analyzes the factors behind the success of Hallyu by presenting interviews with German fans captivated by Korean culture and perspectives from German cultural critics. Accordingly, this paper seeks to identify the key success factors of Hallyu culture by analyzing the characteristics of the two phenomena, cultural dissemination and industrial exchange, as depicted in Kultur-King Korea and proposes directions for the sustainable development of Hallyu.
Culture is inherently dynamic, and Hallyu can be understood both as a cultural dissemination phenomenon and an industrial exchange phenomenon. In this regard, the two are not separate or unrelated, but rather form a dialectical relationship that must maintain a dynamic balance. Therefore, Hallyu culture cannot be sustained merely through simple cultural transmission or the commodification of cultural content. Instead, Hallyu needs to adopt a strategy of “poetic innovation” a creative approach that pursues both universality and uniqueness, rather than choosing one over the other. This strategy will be the key to ensuring the sustainable existence and growth of Hallyu culture.
