🌿 Awareness Workshop on "Plastic Usage and Its Harmful Effects"

A community awareness workshop on “Plastic Usage and Its Harmful Effects” (Tamil medium) was successfully conducted on 31st October 2025 at the Aquatic Resources Technology Laboratory, following an official invitation from the 3A Community Centre, Eravur, Batticaloa.
The session covered essential topics such as:
• Sources of plastic pollution
• Categorization of plastics (mega, macro, meso, micro)
• Microplastic pollution and bioaccumulation
• Environmental and human health impacts
• Mitigation and management strategies toward achieving a zero-plastic zone

Participants also explored research findings from Uva Wellassa University, including sustainable alternatives such as bioplastics, bioremediation strategies for microplastic control, and the use of polythene in eco-brick production. These concepts were delivered through interactive group activities that enhanced community engagement.
The workshop was coordinated by Ms. Piyumi Guruge, Lecturer, Department of Animal Science, with the support of Dr. G. G. N. Thushari, Senior Lecturer, and enthusiastic involvement from 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year students of the Aquatic Resources Technology Degree Programme. The trained group will further contribute to the solid waste management plan in Eravur and serve as community trainers under the Trainer of Trainers (ToT) program.

Let’s continue empowering communities to protect our environment and move towards a sustainable future.
