Faculty of Animal Science and Export Agriculture - FASEA FASEA, established in 2005, aims to excel in teaching, research, and outreach activities by adding value to agriculture and allied sectors.

It also focuses on producing entrepreneurial graduates who could drive agriculture for better economic gain. Faculty of Animal Science and Export Agriculture (FASEA) is one of the three faculties established in 2005 at the inception of the university. All curricular and teaching-learning activities of the degree programmes are developed and promoted being in the vision of the university, “To be th

e centre of excellence for value addition to national resource base”, focusing to agriculture and allied sectors. The mission of the faculty is “to excel in teaching and learning, research and outreach activities in undergraduate, postgraduate and extramural programmes emphasizing value addition to the agricultural and allied resources through scientific and emerging technological approaches”. FASEA has recognized livestock (farm animals), agricultural crops and aquatic resources as the basic agriculture and allied assets of the country. Thus, it expects to contribute to value addition in agricultural resources by providing scientific and technology-based education. Since inception, FASEA is driven for producing agriculturalists with entrepreneurial mind sets to make a significant contribution to the agriculture sector at the end through value addition to the products and services of the sector. In addition to giving knowledge, FASEA expects to creating a conducive environment for teaching-learning activities, and development of attitudes and skills of the students. Our expectation is that our graduates should have capability to provide necessary leadership for taking agricultural sector forward.

Snr. Prof. Dinesh Jayasena is a distinguished academic, internationally recognized researcher, and dedicated educator of Uva Wellassa University of Sri Lanka. Throughout his academic career, he has demonstrated exceptional leadership, integrity, and commitment to advancing higher education, research excellence, and institutional development.

With an outstanding record of scholarly achievements, Snr. Prof. Jayasena has made significant contributions to animal science, food science, and agricultural innovation through high-impact research, international collaborations, and successful mentorship of undergraduate and postgraduate students. His academic accomplishments have brought recognition to both his faculty and the university at national and international levels.

Beyond his research and teaching excellence, Snr. Prof. Jayasena has provided exemplary service to the university through his leadership in academic administration, curriculum development, policy formulation, quality assurance, and strategic planning. His vision for academic excellence, student-centered education, innovation, and stakeholder engagement has contributed significantly to the growth and reputation of the institution.

Uva Wellassa University of Sri Lanka extends its heartfelt gratitude and profound appreciation to Senior Professor Saman K. Herath for his exceptional leadership, unwavering dedication, and invaluable service to the university. He served with distinction as the Dean of the Faculty of Animal Science and Export Agriculture from 29 May 2020 to 28 May 2026, providing visionary leadership that significantly advanced the Faculty’s academic, research, and institutional development.

As an internationally recognized scholar and highly cited scientist in Soil Science, Professor Herath played a pivotal role in strengthening the university’s research culture and academic excellence. His leadership was instrumental in successfully organizing the National Symposium on Agriculture and Life Sciences (NSALS) for three consecutive years and guiding the Faculty’s contribution to the UWU EXPO Educational Exhibition held in celebration of the university’s 20th Anniversary.

Professor Herath also spearheaded major national and international initiatives, including the EU SUCCESSFUL Project, the RIVER Project, and GO-STUDY collaborations with leading Chinese universities, significantly enhancing the university’s global engagement, research partnerships, and international visibility. His commitment to staff welfare was reflected in his support for establishing the Faculty Health Society, while his dedication to community development was demonstrated through his leadership of the Uva Agriculture Development Forum and the UWU Integrated Community Development Project (2021–2025), including the Model Farm Village Concept. His stewardship further contributed to strengthening the Faculty’s infrastructure, laboratory facilities, educational programmes, and collaborative networks with industry and public-sector stakeholders.

His contributions have left a lasting impact on the university’s academic, research, administrative, and community engagement endeavors. His service as Dean and, notably, as Acting Vice Chancellor reflects the trust placed in his leadership and his steadfast commitment to the advancement of Uva Wellassa University. The university community proudly acknowledges his inspirational leadership, dedicated mentorship, and remarkable service to students, staff, and society. We extend our deepest appreciation and wish him continued success, good health, happiness, and excellence in all his future academic and personal endeavors.
