Dr. Kapugollewe Anandakiththi Thero, Head of the Department of Linguistics at the University of Kelaniya, has published Śabda Vidyā Praveśaya (Introduction to Phonetics).

This landmark book introduces the first-ever dedicated Sinhalese International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) chart, offering a systematic breakdown of the Sinhalese sound system.

The publication was formally presented to Vice-Chancellor Senior Prof. Nilanthi de Silva on August 12, 2026, alongside Dean Senior Prof. Patrick Ratnayake.

A major step forward for researchers, teachers, and students of Sri Lankan linguistics!

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Kelaniya held the Freshers’ Welcome and Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2026 of the Translation Circle on July 16, 2026, at the K14-001 Auditorium.

The event welcomed new undergraduates entering the Translation Studies and Translation Methods degree programs for the 2026 academic year, aiming to build collaboration, unity, and academic engagement among new and continuing students.

Key university leadership attended the event, including Senior Professor Patrick Rathnayake, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, and Venerable Dr Kapugollawe Anandakiththi Thero, Head of the Department of Linguistics, alongside department staff and undergraduates.
