Shades of Hope: An Audiovisual Journey Through Rural Sri Lanka

This short documentary is a visual reflection on the lives, livelihoods, and landscapes of Sri Lanka's rural communities.

Drawing on field visits conducted by the Department of Agricultural Extension, University of Peradeniya, between 2018 and 2025, it takes viewers on a journey across the country-from Point Pedro in the north to Dondra in the south, and from the eastern shores to the western plains.

Beyond the fields and farms, the video captures the everyday realities of farming families: their beliefs, traditions, aspirations, and the values that sustain them through changing times. Amidst economic uncertainty, environmental challenges, and social transformation, these communities continue to demonstrate remarkable resilience and hope.

Through a tapestry of landscapes, livelihoods, and moments from everyday rural life, Shades of Hope celebrates the resilience, wisdom, and human spirit that lie at the heart of Sri Lanka's rural food systems.

This event was more than just a forum — it was a celebration of knowledge exchange, teamwork, and the strong connection between academia and farming communities. 🌱

Our majoring students of the Department successfully conducted a Productivity Enhancement Training Program for farmers in Bavlana Janapadaya, Galaha on 02 April 2026.

This training provided a valuable platform for students to apply their academic knowledge in a real-world setting, while engaging directly with the farming community. Through interactive discussions, practical demonstrations, and knowledge sharing, the program focused on enhancing farm productivity, promoting sustainable practices, and strengthening the connection between the university and rural communities.

We are proud of our students for their dedication, professionalism, and commitment to supporting farmer livelihoods. Initiatives such as these not only enrich student learning but also contribute meaningfully to community development and agricultural advancement.
