The department has continuously aligned its curriculum with modern industry and research trends, pioneering Sri Lankaโs first MSc in Artificial Intelligence in 2007 and later establishing the countryโs first and only BSc (Hons) degree in Artificial Intelligence in 2021. The curriculum is designed to build strong foundations across four major domains: Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, and Artificial Intelligence.
This is a four-year full-time honours degree conducted in English medium. For the current intake, the proposed admission count is 50 students. Applicants who have obtained at least a C pass in one of the following subjects at the G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination - Combined Mathematics, Physics, or Higher Mathematics - and at least S passes in two subjects among Combined Mathematics, Higher Mathematics, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, or Information and Communication Technology are eligible to apply for this degree program.

Artificial Intelligence is a rapidly evolving field that spans multiple disciplines including Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Psychology, Neuroscience, Philosophy, and many more. This four-year honours degree was designed to cultivate that โAI mindsetโ while balancing theoretical foundations, practical problem-solving, software engineering skills, and research exposure.

In the first two years, students develop their foundation through core AI, Mathematics, and Statistics modules while also gaining early exposure to Robotics through modules such as Intelligent Machines Inspirational Project. Since AI solutions are primarily developed as software systems, several first- and second-year modules focus on building the knowledge required to develop intelligent software solutions alongside core AI concepts. During the second year, students further strengthen their understanding of Artificial Intelligence while gaining early industry exposure through the Industry-Based AI Software Project conducted under the guidance of both academic and industry supervisors. This helps students develop practical knowledge, industry practices, teamwork, and client-handling experience from their undergraduate years.
The third year includes a six-month industrial training program in AI and related domains. Each year, companies actively seek students from the degree program for internships and industry training opportunities in fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Robotics, Computer Vision, and Automation.
The final year include advanced AI-focused modules and a wide range of electives that allow students to specialize in modern technologies and emerging research areas such as Quantum Computing and Quantum Machine Learning. This year marks a major milestone through the individual research project, where students work on advanced AI research and real-world innovations.
By their final year, many students already have one or more research publications or conference papers, reflecting the strong research-oriented culture embedded within the degree. In addition to research achievements, students win some of the nationโs major Artificial Intelligence competitions each year from their early undergraduate years, showcasing the strong practical and innovation-oriented culture of the program.
