2021 දෙසැම්බර් මස ශ්රී ජයවර්ධනපුර දන්ත වෛද්ය විද්යා පීඨය ආරම්භ වූයේ ශ්රී ජයවර්ධනපුර විශ්වවිද්යාලයේ 9 වන පීඨය මෙන්ම ශ්රී ලංකාවේ දෙවන දන්ත වෛද්ය විද්යා පීඨය ලෙසය.පළමු කණ්ඩායම ළමුන් 32 කුගෙන් ආරම්භ වූ අතර මෙහි පළමු පීඨාධිපතිනිය ලෙස ජ්යෙෂ්ඨ මහාචාර්ය සුරංගි යසවර්ධන කටයුතු කළාය.ආරම්භයේදි සීමිත භෞතික හා මානව සම්පත් වලින් ඇරඹී මෙය අද වනවිට ඒවයේ දියුණුවක් ලගා කරගෙන තිබේ.වත්මන් පීඨාධිපති ලෙස කටයුතු කරනු ලබන මහාචාර්ය ප්රියක පලිපාන පීඨය ආරම්භයේදී පුරෝගාමියෙකු විය.
වර්තමානයේ පීඨය තුල කණ්ඩායම් 4ක සිසුන් 113 ක් සාර්ථකව අධ්යයන කටයුතු සිදු කරනු ලබයි.
අපගේ පාඨමාලාව වසර 5 කින් සමන්විත වන අතර එය අදියර (Phases) 3ක් යටතේ සිදුවේ.
පළමු අදියරේදී(Phase 1) Anatomy, Biochemistry, Physiology යන විෂයයන් වෛද්ය පීඨයේ අචාර්ය මණ්ඩලය හා අපගේ අචාර්යවරැන් මගින්ද Dental Anatomy අපගේ පීඨයේ අචාර්යවරුන් මගින්ද සිදුකරයි.
දෙවන අදියරේදී(phase 2) Phamocology, Microbiology, General Pathology යන විෂයයන් වෛද්ය පීඨ ආචාර්යවරුන් සහ අප පීඨයේ අචාර්යවරුන් මගින්ද, Community Dentistry, General Medicine, General Surgery, Dental Materials යන විෂයයන් අප පීඨයේ ආචාර්යවරුන් හා බාහිර කථිකාචාර්යවරුන් මගින්ද සිදුකරනු ලබයි.මෙහිදී General Medicine සහ General Surgery විෂයයන්ට අදාල සායනික කටයුතු දකුණු කොළඹ ශික්ෂණ රෝහලේදී සිදුකරයි.
අදියර 3(phase 3) අධ්යයන වර්ෂ 2කින් සමන්විත වන අතර එහි පළමු අධ්යයන වසර Oral Medicine, Oral Surgery, Restorative Dentistry, Prosthetic Dentistry, Perioidontology, Paediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics, Oral Pathology යන විෂයයන් අප පීඨයේ ආචාර්යවරුන් හා බාහිර කථිකාචාර්යවරුන්ගේ සහභාගිත්වයෙන් සිදුකරනු ලබයි.එමෙන්ම සායනික පුහුණුව සඳහා කලුබෝවිල දන්ත වෛද්ය මහාචාර්ය ඒකකය සහ වැලිසර නාවික හමුදා රෝහල යොදාගනී.මෙම කලුබෝවිල දන්ත වෛද්ය මහාචාර්ය ඒකකය, පීඨය ආරම්භ කර කෙටි කාලයකින් විවෘත කර එහි රෝගීන්ට ප්රතිකාර කිරිමේ වැඩ කටයුතු එකළ සිටම සිදු කෙරුණි.
අදියර 3හි දෙවන අධ්යයන වසර Special Needs and Geriatric Dentistry, Integrated Dental Care, Advanced Prosthetic-Restorative Care, Forensic Dentistry and Practice Management, Maxillofacial Surgery යන විෂයයන් හැදෑරීමට නියමිතව තිබෙි.
අවසන් වසර සායනික පුහුණුව සඳහා මහරගම දන්තායතනය පරිශ්රයේ ගොඩනැගිල්ලක්ද ලැබීමට නියමිතව තිබේ.
අද වන විට පළමු කණ්ඩායම අදියර 3 හි පළමු අධ්යයන වසර සාර්ථකව සායනික අධ්යාපන කටයුතු හදාරමින් සිටින අතර ඒ සඳහා ප්රමාණවත් Dental chairs ද ප්රමාණවත් තරම් රෝගීන්ගේ පැමිණීමක්ද ඇත.ඔවුන්ගේ සායනික කටයතු විශේෂඥ වෛද්යවරුන්ගේ අධීක්ෂණය යටතේ සිදුවන අතර ඒ සඳහා බාහිර කථිකාචාර්යවරුන්ගේද සහය ලැබෙමින් පවතී.
දෙවන කණ්ඩායම අදියර දෙකෙහි General Medicine හා General Surgery සඳහා දකුණු කොළඹ ශික්ෂණ රොහලේ සායනික කටයුතු සිදුකරන අතරම ප්රායෝගික පුහුණුවීම් අප පීඨයේ පවතින Skills lab හිදී සිදුකරයි.
තෙවන හා සිව්වන කණ්ඩායම් පළමු අදියරෙහි පූර්ව සායනික අධ්යයන කටයුතු සිදුකරමින් පවතී.
අධ්යයන කටයුතු මෙන්ම පීඨ සිසුන් විවිධ විශය බාහිර ක්රියාකාරකම් වලද නිරත වේ.එනම් "දසන් පවුර" සමාජ සත්කාරක වැඩසටහන,මුඛ සෞබ්ය පිලිබද දැනුවත් කීරිමේ වැඩසටහන් මෙන්ම වෛද්ය පීඨය මගි්න් සිදුකරන වාර්ෂික සර්වරාත්රික පිරිත,වාර්ෂික ක්රීඩා උළෙල, වාර්ෂික කලා උළෙල ,"පැදුර" වැඩසටහන ආදියෙහි අපගේ සිසුන් සහභාගිත්වයෙන් මෙන්ම සංවිධානයෙන්ද සහය විය.
මෙලෙස ආරම්භයේ සිට පීඨයේ කටයුතු සාර්ථකව සිදුකරමින් සම්පත් වලින් දියුණු වෙමින් ඉදිරියට ගමන් කරයි.
අප පීඨයෙන් අධ්යයන කටයුතු වලට සීමා නොවූ විෂය බාහිර හැකියාවලින් පිරි ගුණාත්මක දන්ත වෛද්යවරුන් රටට බිහි වන බව නිසැකය.
The Faculty of Dental Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura was established in December 2021 as the 9th faculty of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and the second dental faculty in Sri Lanka. The first batch started with 32 students, and Senior Professor Surangi Yasawardena served as the first dean. Initially it began with limited physical and human resources, but it has since made progress. Professor Priyake Palipana, the current dean, was a pioneer in establishing the faculty. Currently, four batches of 113 students are successfully pursuing their studies in the faculty. Our course duration is five years and is conducted in three phases.
In Phase 1, Anatomy, Biochemistry, and Physiology subjects are taught by the Medical faculty's lecturers and our faculty's lecturers.Dental Anatomy and Oral physiology is handled by our Dental faculty's lecturers. In Phase 2, Pharmacology, Microbiology, and General Pathology subjects are covered by Medical faculty's lecturers and our faculty's lecturers. Community Dentistry, General Medicine, General Surgery, and Dental Materials subjects are handled by both our faculty's lecturers and external lecturers. Clinical training related to General Medicine and General Surgery is conducted at the Colombo South Teaching Hospital.
Phase 3 consists of 2 academic years. In the first academic year, subjects such as Oral Medicine, Oral Surgery, Restorative Dentistry, Prosthetic Dentistry, Periodontology, Orthodontics, Paediatric Dentistry, and Oral Pathology are taught by our faculty's lecturers and external lecturers. Clinical training is conducted at the Dental Professorial Unit in Kalubowila and the Welisara Navy Hospital. In the second academic year of Phase 3, students are scheduled to study Special Needs and Geriatric Dentistry, Integrated Dental Care, Advanced Prosthetic-Restorative Care, Forensic Dentistry and Practice Management, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. For final-year clinical training, a building is scheduled to be allocated within the Institute of Oral health, Maharagama premises.
Currently, the first batch is successfully undergoing clinical training in Phase 3's first academic year with sufficient dental chairs and a steady flow of patients. Their clinical work is supervised by specialist doctors, with support from external lecturers. The second batch is conducting clinical training in General Medicine and General Surgery at the Colombo South Teaching Hospital while also undergoing practical training at Dental faculty's skill lab. The third and fourth batches are engaged in pre-clinical studies in Phase 1.
Apart from academic activities, faculty students participate in various extracurricular activities, such as the "Dasan Pawura" social service program, oral health awareness programs, and annual events like the Piritha ceremony, sports fiesta and “Padura” arts event organized by the Medical faculty. Students from our faculty actively participate in and contribute to the organization of these events as well.
The faculty has been functioning successfully since its inception, progressing and developing its resources. It is certain that our faculty will produce high quality dentists who are not only academically proficient but also endowed with extracurricular skills, humane qualities and empathy, benefiting the nation.
