Established in 1975, the Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture (PGIA) is the oldest of the postgraduate institutes in Sri Lanka and widely recognized for higher education and research in Agriculture. The PGIA is located within the University of Peradeniya, widely acknowledged as one of the most scenic University campuses in the world. Over the years PGIA has greatly expanded its portfolio to offer programmes and courses in a wide range of disciplines. With the current enrolment of close to 2000 students. Being the pre-eminent institution for postgraduate research in Agriculture in Sri Lanka, PGIA is also renowned for its high quality research programmes. So far it has produced many locally and internationally distinguished graduates including 114 Ph.D., 499 M.Phil., 3516 M.Sc. and 295 MBA graduates, and 991 Postgraduate Diploma holders since its inception.
The PGIA is the only institute in Sri Lanka dedicated exclusively to postgraduate training and manpower development in agriculture and related fields. Offering Masterโs, MSc, MBA, MPhil, DBA and PhD programs across 30 disciplines, PGIA stands as the undisputed leader among higher degree-awarding institutions in agriculture in the country. Our teaching panel comprises over 350 highly qualified academics, scientists, researchers, and administrators from both the government and private sectors, ensuring that we maintain the highest educational standards, comparable to leading agricultural universities globally.
The PGIA has been able to provide the students with state of the art facilities including classrooms, computer centers and a library while the Faculty of Agriculture provides access to a wider range of laboratory facilities for postgraduate research students and the University offers opportunities for recreational and many other activities. The student body of PGIA also organizes various exciting activities throughout the year using the University facilities, building strong networks among students.
