Faculty of Built Environment and Spatial Sciences To be a globally acclaimed center of excellence in Built Environment and Spatial Sciences.

The Faculty of Built Environment and Spatial Sciences (FBESS) is the newest addition to the KDU and the first faculty of Southern Campus, KDU as well. The faculty consists of three departments namely, Department of Architecture, Department of Quantity Surveying and Department of Spatial Sciences. Those departments conduct seven degree programs for cadets, day scholars and foreign students. Further

Faculty of Built Environment and Spatial Sciences held the faculty sessions of annual International Research Conference on 30th September and 01st October 2025, bringing together leading scholars, researchers, and industry experts from across the country- and beyond for a dynamic exchange of ideas, findings, and future visions.

Held at KDU Southern Campus, for the 04th consecutive time, the conference featured over 30 oral and poster presentations spanning across the disciplines of built environment and management studies. The theme of this year’s sessions, “The Inclusivist Agenda: Synergizing Shared Knowledge in Lived Space” emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary research in solving global challenges.

Renowned figures in academia including Prof. Chandana Jayalath, Prof. Narein Perera, Prof. Menaha Thayapalan, Dr. Jagath K. Gunatilake, and Prof. Dushan C. Jayawickrame, delivered compelling talks on emerging trends and breakthroughs, drawing connections between academic research and real-world impact.

Over 30 original research were presented through oral and poster sessions offering rich opportunities for networking, with participants forging new research partnerships, exploring interdisciplinary projects, and engaging in vibrant academic discussions.

Intakes 39, 40 and 41students of the Department of Spatial Sciences conducted a deformation monitoring survey at Victoria Powerhouse, Adhikarigama in the month of March 2025. This project was the essential task to cover the practical of construction survey modules of BSc (Hons) in Surveying Sciences Degree. Students used GNSS, precise levelling, and precise traversing for the deformation monitoring.

BSc (Hons) in Geoinformatics degree program has been started by the Department of Spatial Sciences. Currently, 39 students are following this degree program including day scholars and officer cadets who were enlisted from all streams of Advanced level examination. This program is designed to learn modern Geospatial subjects including GIS, Remote Sensing, GIS programming, and Geomathematics. We believe that BSc (Hons) in Geoinformatics degree program will be a turning point to see the world for students beyond the traditional aspects.
