Adjunct Facilitators of University of Liberia Demand Payment Amidst Neglect

Adjunct facilitators at the University of Liberia (UL) are raising concerns over unpaid wages and neglect by the administration under Dr. Layli Maparyan. Despite not receiving payment since February 2025, over 500 adjunct facilitators are being expected to resume teaching duties for the new academic semester without any resolution to their financial predicament.

The adjuncts have expressed frustration over the lack of communication from the university regarding payment schedules or plans to address the outstanding arrears. This prolonged silence has left the educators in a state of despair and uncertainty.

In a statement released by the adjuncts, they highlight the challenges they face, calling attention to the university's failure to provide clarity on the payment situation. The adjuncts describe their experience as one of desperation and modern slavery within the institution.

With no end in sight to their plight, adjunct facilitators are now planning a protest and potential go-slow action in August if their demands are not met. Their key demands include immediate payment of arrears, transparent communication from the university, and institutional reforms to prevent similar exploitation in the future.

The adjuncts emphasize that their fight is not just for their own survival but for the dignity of all educators in Liberia. They are urging the university administration to address their concerns promptly to avoid disruption to academic activities.

Dr. Layli Maparyan Refuses to Pay Adjuncts, as Lecturers Set to Protest

Monrovia, Liberia — The Adjunct Facilitators of the University of Liberia (UL) are raising a red flag over what they describe as deliberate neglect and injustice by the administration under Dr. Layli Maparyan. Despite being unpaid since February 2025, UL is moving ahead to open the new academic semester — without addressing the plight of the very lecturers who carry the bulk of the teaching load.

For nearly Seven(7) months, over 500 Adjunct Facilitators have shouldered their duties without compensation. Lecturers have delivered lectures, graded assignments, and mentored thousands of students, yet no concrete information or payment schedule has been communicated by the administration. This silence has left adjuncts in a state of dilemma, desperation, and frustration.

> “The University is bent on reopening as if all is well, while lecturers remain unpaid and abandoned. Students are being told to plan their courses, but the facilitators who must teach them are struggling to survive,” the statement reads.

The Adjuncts note that the University has failed to provide any timeline, terms, or plan for payment of the arrears. The absence of accountability or communication has deepened what they describe as “a climate of despair, humiliation, and modern slavery in Liberia’s flagship institution.”

Planned Protest and Industrial Action
Adjunct Lecturers are now preparing for a protest, warning that August will not pass without the payment of their arrears. In addition, they are considering a go-slow action — refusing to attend classes if the situation remains unresolved.

The group stresses that while they are committed to serving the nation’s students, they cannot continue to work under conditions where they are exploited, ignored, and left without the means to provide for their own families.

Key Demands:

1. Immediate payment of all arrears owed to Adjunct Facilitators since May 2025.

2. Transparent communication from the University administration, including a concrete plan and timeline for future payments.

3. Institutional reform to ensure that no educator at the University of Liberia is ever subjected to this form of exploitation again.

“We will not allow another semester to begin under these inhumane conditions. Our message is clear: Pay the adjuncts now or face academic disruption.”

The Adjunct Facilitators reaffirm that their fight is not only for survival but also for the dignity of all educators across Liberia.
