Our school theme for the academic year 2026-2027 โ Rise and Actโ encourages us to take action. To take action is important. But to take effective action is more important. If the action we take is not effective, we just waste our time, energy, and resources. In this message, I will discuss five things we must do before taking action.
(๐) ๐๐๐ค๐ ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฌ๐๐ฅ๐ฏ๐๐ฌ ๐ฏ๐๐ฅ๐ฎ๐๐๐ฅ๐
Only when we are valuable can we produce valuable actions. To make ourselves valuable, we must pursue knowledge and wisdom. Equipping ourselves with knowledge and wisdom is the best investment we can ever make in life. Proverbs 16: 16 says, โIt is better --- much better --- to have wisdom and knowledge than to have gold and silverโ.
(๐) ๐๐๐ค๐ ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฌ๐๐ฅ๐ฏ๐๐ฌ ๐ญ๐๐๐๐ก๐๐๐ฅ๐
In the pursuit of knowledge and wisdom, we are sometimes tempted to believe that we know everything, and we do not need to continue learning anymore. We start to think highly of ourselves and lowly of others.
No matter how knowledgeable we become, there are still many things for us to learn. Life today is changing fast, and to keep abreast with this always-changing world, we must remain teachable. John Maxwell says, โTeachability is the willingness to learn, unlearn, and relearn. Teachability is the hunger to discover and growโ.
(๐) ๐๐๐ค๐ ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฌ๐๐ฅ๐ฏ๐๐ฌ ๐ก๐ฎ๐ฆ๐๐ฅ๐
We must humble ourselves in our pursuit of knowledge and wisdom. Teachability and humility always go together. Without these two traits, effective learning can never take place.
(๐) ๐๐๐ค๐ ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฌ๐๐ฅ๐ฏ๐๐ฌ ๐๐ฏ๐๐ข๐ฅ๐๐๐ฅ๐
When we continue learning in a diligent, teachable, and humble manner, we will become more knowledgeable, more educated, and more valuable people. So, what is next?
The ultimate goal of learning is to make a difference in peopleโs lives and to make contributions to society. We learn not only for ourselves, but also for others and most importantly for God (if you are a person of faith). Are you making yourself available to serve others and God?
(๐) ๐๐๐ค๐ ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฌ๐๐ฅ๐ฏ๐๐ฌ ๐ฏ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ง๐๐ซ๐๐๐ฅ๐
Christianity is not only a saving religion, but also a serving religion. Choosing to serve means choosing to make ourselves vulnerable. We cannot serve without sacrifice. Rick Warren says, โIf you only serve when it is convenient for you, you are not a real servant. Real servants do what is needed, even when it is inconvenient.โ Our lord and Savior Jesus Christ demonstrated the ultimate form of vulnerability by giving up his life for our sake. For Christians, vulnerability is not a weakness. It is a strength, a profound spiritual strength.
In conclusion, action is a deciding factor in life. Only when we act can we rise to the next level. A proverb says, โActions speak louder than words.โ It is not completely true. Only effective actions speak louder. To make our actions effective, let us make ourselves valuable, teachable, humble, available, and vulnerable.
