So excited to have the incredibly talented artist OAKEY joining us for the winter residency! π±β¨ Her work is a stunning blend of nature, science, and art. Can't wait to see what she creates! π«
"OAKEY is a multidisciplinary artist based on Kaurna Yerta (Adelaide, South Australia). Her practice encompasses sculpture, site-specific installations, performance, video, and sound. Working out of Central Studios, she creates work that responds to both urban and natural environments using a diverse range of materials.
Drawing from her immersive experiences in varied natural settings, from the Amazon to Timbuktu, OAKEY has developed a profound fascination with the interconnectedness of the living world and the magic and wonder within it. Her creative process delves into the realms of unseen forces, networks, and spaces, operating on both a cellular and cosmic level. Her work particularly focuses on exploring consciousness, hidden energies, and the healing power of plants and nature, while also incorporating her keen interest in science, geometry, and architecture.
Since completing her Bachelor of Creative Arts degree with first-class honours in 2019, OAKEY has been awarded multiple studio residencies, received a Guildhouse Catapult mentorship with Catherine Truman, as well as a glassblowing mentorship at the JamFactory. Most recently, OAKEY has received an Arts South Australia Grant for a research trip to Mongolia.
In 2022, OAKEY's ephemeral artwork Reverence was awarded first prize at the Heysen Sculpture Biennial and was featured in Artlink magazine. In 2024 she was a finalist in the SALA Festivals City of Adelaide Award, and her work βPORTALβ won The Advertiser Contemporary Art Award. Beyond her artistic practice, OAKEY serves as the lead installer at Adelaide Contemporary Experimental and contributes to the installation teams at the JamFactory and other institutions."
