Dr Omar N’Shea sat down with Alex Caruana, a Master’s student at the University of Malta, and we are happy to share this conversation with you all. ✨

We would like to thank Alex for sharing his thoughts and experiences through which he has highlighted the importance of inclusion and continuous support for the university community.

In the conclusion to , we are happy to share yet another voice that helped contribute to a deeper understanding of the many different paths within our community.

Michelle has been observant of how university life has evolved, yet she still managed to capture so beautifully the essence of a true university experience: it's also the people who make it worthwhile.

And as May comes to a close, the last segment of our “Different Journeys, Shared Belonging” campaign focuses on generational diversity - which leads to a richer exchange of ideas, enhanced mentoring and improved problem-solving.

Daniella, who began her UM journey at 50 years young, found that this indeed was the case, and that a great deal of personal growth ensued.

Today, the Equity Office participated for the third consecutive year in the University of Malta Research Expo (UMRE 2026). 🔬

Our participation in UMRE 2026 forms part of the Office’s broader outreach initiatives aimed at promoting awareness and embedding EDI values across the University’s research community.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by and spoke with us — it was a real pleasure to connect with you all ✨

On the 3rd week of our campaign, we tackle disability and neurodiversity within our student community.

The impact of a supportive university environment lasts well beyond graduation, as former UM student Jacob can attest.

True inclusion is a shared responsibility.

Individual access arrangements are still important, but the main goal is to create an equitable culture where different needs are considered and respected from the start.

Creating a safer and more respectful environment for all UM staff.

Dealing with Bullies: Building Resilience and Boundaries 🛡️

Today, the Counselling Services at the Health and Wellness Centre, in collaboration with the Equity Office and HRMD, successfully hosted the workshop "Dealing with Bullies – Building Boundaries and Resilience".

Led by Dr Mary Joan Camilleri and Ms Donatella Pace Olivari, the session focused on:

✅ Boundary Management: Setting physical, emotional, and legal limits.

✅ Third-Level Resilience: Turning challenges into opportunities for growth.

✅ Support & Prevention: Identifying "red flags" and navigating UM policies.

By investing in our leadership and personal development, we continue to protect our community from the impact of toxic encounters and foster a culture of mutual respect.

A big thank you to all the staff members who participated today! 🤝

As we move into the 2nd week of our campaign, we turn our focus on Gender Diversity & Gender Identity.

Achilleas' story is testament to how dialogue & reflection around the importance of recognising and respecting diverse gender identities strengthens inclusion within our community, while creating a safer environment for everyone.

Wrapping up our first week from with Shahed’s story ✨.

The richness of cultural diversity adds vibrancy to our community; it brings about a space where different traditions, perspectives, and experiences come together to create something stronger 🌍.

It’s through these everyday interactions that we learn from one another and build a more connected and inclusive environment 🤝

The Equity Office is pleased to have taken part in the two-day Gender and Sexualities Conference 2026, organised by the Department of Gender and Sexualities at the University of Malta together with the Human Rights Directorate. 📚✨

During the conference, Nadia Abdilla presented findings from her doctoral research and ongoing work through her presentation:
"Dejjem ninkwieta fuq il-flus..." [I am always worrying about money] – The gendered dimensions of emotional inequalities in managing household money in Malta. 💬💰

Drawing on a critical feminist qualitative study of young married couples in Malta, the research explores how spouses interpret responsibility, worry and confidence in everyday financial decision-making, and how these affective dimensions shape the gendered organisation of domestic economic life.

Martina Balagna also had the opportunity to chair one of the sessions, themed: “Re-configuring Power, Identity, and the Post-Human.”

It was a privilege to engage with colleagues and researchers dedicated to these critical fields of study. We would like to extend our thanks to the organisers for a successful event. 🙏
