Today is International Migrants day, where we reflect on the experiences of those who left their home countries in search for opportunities, safety, or a better life, as well recognising their contributions to both their home and host countries.

Many issues still face migrants worldwide, often at the expense of their human rights, and thus we must ensure that everyone's human rights are respected and untouched, necessary to lead a dignified and fulfilling life.

Our ‘Mental Health Minutes’ for this month focuses on the topic of toxic relationships.

In this article, we tackle what toxic relationships are, which people are most susceptible to them, and how to go about dealing with them if you find yourself in one.

Today is World Human Rights Day, the day the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). A milestone document, which proclaims the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being - regardless of race, colour, religion, s*x, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.

This year’s theme is 'Equality', which includes addressing and finding solutions for deep-rooted forms of discrimination that have affected the most vulnerable people in societies, including women and girls, indigenous peoples, people of African descent, LGBTI people, migrants and people with disabilities, among others.

Equality, inclusion and non-discrimination, is the best way to reduce inequalities, and ensure better living conditions for all

Today is the international day of person with disabilities. Disability inclusion is an essential condition to upholding human rights, personal dignity, and security.

Under normal circumstances, persons with disabilities are less likely to access health care, education, employment and to participate in the community, and all of this became even a bigger problem through restrictions that came about due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

We need to create further awareness and inclusion to ensure that the rights of people with disabilities are kept and that they are able to participate in all aspects of society.

Today is the international day for the elimination of violence against women. Violence against women remains a major public health problem, as well as a violation of women’s human rights worldwide.

While pervasive, gender-based violence is not inevitable. It can and must be prevented. Stopping this violence starts with believing survivors, adopting comprehensive and inclusive approaches that tackle the root causes, transform harmful social norms, and empower women and girls.

Equality, peace, and women’s human rights cannot be fulfilled without putting an end to violence against women and girls.

MMSA is shocked by and condemns the recent incident in which a man was urged to jump from a bastion. Su***de is not a topic to joke about, and clearly, more awareness on the topic is needed.

Su***de can often be seen by the person experiencing these thoughts as a means to escape from a situation of suffering. If emotionally, someone feels that they are in a situation which is causing a great amount of emotional pain, su***de may appeal as the only possible exit. This is further reinforced by the emotional burdens of worthlessness and/or hopelessness. To some, their su***de may even be a means of self-expression. By undergoing su***de, they may wish to get a certain thought across to other people.

There are a number of risk factors which may increase the likelihood of a person to attempt su***de. Some of these include:

• Having a mental illness such as depression
• Physical conditions, particularly if it results in pain and/or serious disabilities
• Difficult life events: including physical, s*xual and emotional abuse
• Recent difficult life events – relationship problems or health problems
• Living alone
• Exposure to su***de
• Previously attempted su***de or self-harm

How to approach a person you believe is considering su***de?

• If you do not feel that you are able to ask someone about suicidal thoughts it is best not to do so. Instead, seek out another person who is able to speak to them.
• Approach the person as soon as possible and when doing so, it is crucial to be clear and to let them know why you are concerned.
• Ask the person directly if they are considering su***de in a non-judgmental way. Without a clear question you cannot get a clear answer.
• It is important to try to appear both calm and empathic. A negative reaction may make the other person uncomfortable and less willing to talk.
• Do not try to play down a person’s suicidal thoughts by telling them that they are being irrational.
• If there is an imminent risk it is important to work with the person who is suicidal to ensure their safety. The focus is to be there for the person but also to keep the person safe!
• It is important to suggest professional help as soon as possible.
• If the suicidal person is refusing professional help, it is best to call either a crisis telephone line or a mental health center to ask for their guidance.

What sources are available to people considering su***de?
• The Kriżi App
• Kellimni.com
• Appogg Supportline 179

Having said all this - you are not alone, and remember that someone out there loves you even if you do not feel it - remember that people’s lives wouldn’t be the same without you in them. Su***de is never the answer! Always seek out help and if you ever need people to talk to, we are all always here. Remember there are more ears than people in this world!
